  • ME Caught In The Wild

Thanks to CarScoops, we have today’s capturing of the ME in the wild (ITW) pictures.

[Quote=CarScoops]2020 Mid-Engine Corvette Snapped In The Wild (By Michael Gauthier; August 28, 2018)

Chevrolet introduced the 2019 Corvette ZR1 less than a year ago, but all eyes are focused on the next-generation model which will become the first production Vette with a mid-engine powertrain.

Click image for larger version Name:	Carscoops ITW.jpg Views:	1 Size:	306.2 KB ID:	6302

The highly-anticipated car was recently spotted by Carscoops’ intrepid reader Brett Borgard and it’s clear that the model will be a significant departure from its predecessor. Despite the radical changes, it appears the car will have an evolutionary front fascia which will ensure there’s no mistaking the model for anything but a Corvette.

Styling details are hidden beneath heavy camouflage, but the car features a wide grille which is located underneath a sloping hood. The model also appears to have angular headlights which could be an evolution of the ones used on the current model.

Bigger changes occur further back as the mid-engine Corvette adopts a more rakish windscreen which flows into a more dynamic roof. Further below, we can see aerodynamic side skirts and new side mirrors which are mounted near the base of the A-pillar.

One of the biggest changes is the modified proportions as the mid-engine layout means there’s a wide body panel separating the doors from the rear wheels. That isn’t the only change as the model appears to have flying buttresses and a relatively flat engine cover which is hidden beneath heavy camouflage.

Out back, the C7’s center-mounted four-tailpipe exhaust system has been dropped for a more conventional setup. It features two tips near the outside edges of the rear bumper. Speaking of the latter, we can see it will be ventilated and feature a flap to improve underbody aerodynamics.

While we have a pretty good idea of what the Corvette will look like, much less is known about its specifications. However, previous reports have suggested the model will have active aerodynamics as well as a lightweight design which features a mix of aluminum, carbon fiber, fiberglass and magnesium. Despite all these lightweight materials, the car is rumored to tip the scales at more than 3,500 lbs (1,587 kg).

Engine options remain a closely guarded secret, but rumors have suggested the base model will have an upgraded version of the 6.2-liter LT1 V8 that powers the current model. If the reports are correct, the new engine could produce around 500 hp (372 kW / 507 PS).

Rumors have also suggested the car could have a new 5.5-liter flat-plane crank V8 which is offered in naturally-aspirated and twin-turbo guise. The former could develop more than 600 hp (447 kW / 608 PS), while the latter could bring that figure towards the 800 hp (596 kW / 811 PS) mark.

There have also been rumors about a hybrid variant which would use the twin-turbo V8 as well as a 200 hp (149 kW / 202 PS) electric motor. This could potentially give the all-wheel drive supercar a combined maximum output of around 1,000 hp (745 kW / 1014 PS)./Quote]

    Because it's a convertible.

I need help understanding this please Bikerjulio, for the wheelbase is the same, the doors are the same and the rear fenders are the same. Could it be just a deliberate-GM-distortionary camo treatment? Please help me get smarter.

        You omitted the bolded part
the model appears to have flying buttresses and a relatively flat engine cover which is hidden beneath heavy camouflage
        .
Plus I can see the roof seam in the appropriate location. That, plus the bolded comment indicates a convertible.

Look how low this car is compared to the truck, huh interesting.

Is this the same spot that the other ME picture came from? Is GM still testing at this location and staying at this hotel? If yes why don’t we have more people camped out at that location? Are they bouncing from locations? Or are these older pictures being leaked that been taken a few weeks ago?

That motel is a known home for the GM Colorado testing crew, though I too had that very same question.

If that's the case I wonder why we don't see a ton of photos from all angles? Seems like the local CO corvette folks would be out gladly playing 007 Vette Spies!

These are gm photos given to various news outlets...

looks good...another few months of spy photos slowly releasing details of the new corvette..

the nsx has been a dud in the marketplace. I dont see any benefit with gas priced as it is today and the government is lowering the ridiculous 54mpg fleet average or at the very least pushed that nonsense back...

the nsx has been getting panned starting around 150grand.. 571 units of nsx s sold in 2017 total. 100 units sold so far in 2018.

should have been 100 grand as is and it might and its a big might have been more successful..

they should produce one without the electric motor up front...allowed for more frunk space...lightened up the car and lowered the price...

nobody cares about all that nonsense.should have just upped the turbo boost and kept it rwd.

steering is numb...on the nsx. The nsx evokes little emotion or connection to passionate desire or fun experience, the nsx is competently engineered but its boring ...nsx 157 grand, audi R8 138 grand with a v10...corvettes going to crush these old school exotics amd starting in the sixties.

corvette team can do a great job by offering a 500 hp dct mrc rear mid engine c8 z51like model for five grand more than todays version optioned equally.

i can barely see anything in these spy photos...but what i can see it looks good,

So a group of us are returning to Texas from the Steamboat Springs Corvette Weekend and we stop for gas and a bathroom break in Silverton off of US40. There in the lot is a intermediate SUV all wrapped up with camo similar to the ME's in all the pictures. When we walk in we see 4 guys sitting together and one has a 'pocket protector'. They must be engineers, right! I ask where are the ME Corvettes today? After giving the standard 'neither confirm or deny' answer, the guy with the pocket protector says he's heard that there were two unicorns running around the hills! That got a laugh out of everyone.

As we were leaving the cashier said there were two small cars all wrapped up like the SUV there earlier, and they seemed to have guys 'guarding them' as they took turns using the bathroom. She had no idea what they were.

Just my luck..... I'd just as soon be a day late as an hour.....

Huh I was thinking these must be leaked from GM or the magazine is holding on to these pictures and releasing slowly.

if GM is still testing at this location you would think ever magazine or YouTube reporter is camping out and taking spy shots..

Can anyone enlarge the roof -line? I just can't see breaks which would suggest a HT Convert.
