Yesterday’s reveal of spy photos showing Corvette Racing testing the C8.R at Road Americawas just the appetizer. Now get ready for the full-course meal as we have a full set of spy photos showing the upcoming racing variant of the C8 mid-engine Corvette.

The C8.R, like its C7.R predecessor is an exaggerated widebody racing version of the street cars. However, they still carry the same overt design cues as the street cars and so this is the best look yet at what the new Corvette will look like!
[SPIED] Spy Photos of the Mid-Engine Corvette C8.R Offers the Best Look Yet at the Upcoming C8

No longer are the various lines of the car as well as the side scoops hidden from sight with the heavy black camouflage. We see now the shape of the actual side air intakes, the feature lines on the doors and for the first time in the series of the modern Corvette Racing team, the hood design is clean and without the usual waterfall-type hood for expelling hot air from the engine which is no behind the drivers.

Corvette Racing’s program manager Doug Fehan often talks about cascade engineering, meaning that each generation of street car improves the next race car, which in turn improves the next generation street car. Like the Corvette C7.R and the Z06, the C8.R race car has been developed alongside the street version of the C8 mid-engine Corvette, and so it’s exciting to see the development of the C8 generation being attacked from both ends of the spectrum.

There has been a lot of discussion about the sound of the car and I have included an embed of the C8.R sound as first brought to us by SportsCar365.com

Although the Corvette sounds different than what we are use to, I am willing to trade that for a Corvette Race car that can win at Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans. There will be growing pains for sure with the new car, but give the Pratt & Miller team some time and America’s favorite sports car will once again stand on the top of the podium at the world’s greatest racetracks.

And now for the full set of Corvette C8.R spy photos from Road America!

There has been no shortage of spy photos and videos of the upcoming mid-engine Chevy Corvette. The C8 will mark what's arguably the biggest shift (both literally and figuratively) in the Corvette's 65-year history. For the past few generations, GM and Chevy have supported the GT-class Corvette Racing team in a partnership with Pratt & Miller. After the recent IMSA race at Wisconsin's Road America, the new C8.R race car was spied testing on the four-mile circuit.

Unlike the heavily camouflaged prototypes we've seen on the street, the C8.R is only wearing a black and white wrap. This is by far our best look yet at the new car. Low-hood, long-tail proportions give away its mid-engine setup. As we haven't seen the road car, it's difficult to say how far removed the C8.R is from its sibling.

The most obvious visual difference between the street and race versions of the new Corvette C8 is that comically large rear wing. The wing and both the front and rear diffusers extend far beyond the rear bumper, ensuring the Michelin racing slicks will have plenty of grip on the track. The huge brakes take up nearly the entire inside diameter of the wheel. Both the front and rear fenders appear wider than what we've seen on other prototypes.

Other changes include some new vents on the front and rear bumpers. The exhaust has also moved to a more central position. Until both cars are revealed, it's hard to say how much the pair will differ. We're hoping to see both models sometime in the next year.

It used to say in signature box, “A 2020 ME is coming to our garage.”

I just changed it to say, “A 2020 ME Corvette is happily coming to our garage.”

Thank you! You remembered that GM trademarked that name, or that its looks that reminded you. A very, very bold Manta Ray is coming!

Beautifully proportioned highlighting the cab forward, mid engine advantage. Sharp creases folded by sensual curves. It is organic origami. It is all that I hoped for with the extraordinary execution of great design. Can I be driving mine by next summer?

So very cool... this C8.R is absolutely stunning (even in camo wrap)! I can just imagine how great it's going to look in race colors. I'm guessing they'll go with the same color scheme as the three previous generations... with a few tweaks.

And this C8.R gives us a much better idea of how the production version will look... very very cool!

It's really exciting to think that we're finally witnessing the ME Corvette actually coming to fruition!!

Frank, we all can tell you are super excited. What a wonderful day for us all. I had not even envisioned the C8.R in race colors until you mentioned it. We know it will be yellow for as the Corvette RAce Team Chief Doug Fehan always says, ”yellow is safest for my drivers — for those racing around us know where we are at all times— helps us avoid being hit because they didn’t see us.” And he always immediately and secondarily adds, “yellow is the best color for race spectators (for we are seen and noticed even if the cars are far way away from where they), yellow is also the best color to being spotted on TV, and lastly, yellow is the best color for our sponsors logs to stand out on.” (Slight paraphrasing on my part.

So if anyone has photoshop ability, it would be magnificent for us to see it in a bright yellow, like a Velocity Yellow. As to the color scheme with teaks you mentioned
Frank, my guess is that we will see little greater display of “Jake.”

Any Ideas others’ have as to what might change?

And because the race cars are yellow, thank you Doug, that insures that yellow is offered as one of the Corvette’s customer colors — for purely on its take rate, not sure yellow would otherwise survive as an offered color year after year.
