  • C8’s In a Group, With A Porsche 911 Turbo Along In This Testing/Development Session

    Thanks Autospies!

[Quote=Autospies]San Diego is home to many things that are simply fantastic.

If I had the dough, I'd pull the rip cord right now and start enjoying my 72 degree sunny days hanging out with Agent 001.

Because of this, it's common that the automotive industry hosts product events and does some developmental testing of its vehicles there. If you've got the budget, why not?

    SPIED! All-new, C8 Chevrolet Corvette

Funny enough, some journalists got more then they bargained for while testing another manufacturer's product outside of San Diego. Our friend, Lauren Fix, snapped and even nabbed the all-new C8 Chevrolet Corvette on video.

And it wasn't just one. We're talking about a massive convoy of next-gen C8s.

Joining the convoy was also a Porsche 911 Turbo. So, that gives you an idea of just how high GM's performance division is setting the benchmark.

001 also spent some time enhancing the spy shots so you get even more detail.

While the cars are still camouflaged, we're thinking this is the Corvette in its final stages — shakedown testing. The last time we saw a GM performance convoy of this size, the product reveal followed within a couple months.

C8 Corvettes Spied Testing in SoCal

It’s only a matter of time before we see the long-awaited mid-engine 2020 Corvette in person. This week, we spied four 2020 C8 Corvette prototypes leaving Temecula, California, about 60 miles north of San Diego. Also accompanying the Corvettes was a caravan of Chevy SUVs and even a Porsche 911, which is presumeably being used as a benchmark against the C8. We’ve also seen videos of the C8 testing in snowy SoCal conditions this week.Four C8 test mules were following a new Porsche 911, presumably a turbo model, as a testing benchmark. A variety of Chevy SUVs followed.

Debates are still out on what engine the C8 will have in it. The Corvette team has been working on a dual overhead cam V8, or perhaps a tuned up LT1 that has the potential of making 600 horsepower naturally aspirated. How far will the Corvette stray from its roots? Currently, the option for a manual transmission on the GT500 was ditched for a dual-clutch variant. Will Chevy do the same?

CALIFORNIA GAS IS EXPENSIVE $3.65 FOR REGULAR? OR ARE MY SPECTACLES BROKEN?

Thank SheepDog. Good find. I was curious to see if there was any more, but no. [Source=https://www.hotrod.com/articles/c8-c...testing-socal/]

I found two more from MotorTrend — obviously of the “C8 Corvette Caravan” getting gasoline.

Different wheels on those cars compared to the one captured in Detroit. I think I like these better, but they're still pretty busy.

Also interesting that the Detroit car has only the patterned camo, but the California cars have the heavy black cladding. Wonder why.

corvette likely takes a 911 along because in the past, magazines blasted the vette for poor, even dangerous in wet conditions. i doubt that the 911 is an AWD turbo or carrera 4. GM would not expect their 2 wh drive car to perform with an AWD car. the expectation would be performance near the 2 wh drive 911. at best, i would expect C8 to have 50% weight over rear tires vs 60% for the 911. still maybe not up to 911 wet performance, but much closer than FE C7.

Good analysis conmax! Maybe that is exactly why GM brought the 9111 2WD along in poor traction conditions to compare to the 2WD ME Corvette.

The average weight distribution of the many exotic ME’s I looked at was 57% rear, with as you know the Porsche with its rear engine being the highest one I looked at. The Ferrari 812 Superfast is the best (highest) rear wheel bias of the FE’s with 53% real wheel balance.

Going to be interesting how this all filters out for the Corvette ME’s weigh balance.

I would think the C8 would certainly have more than 50% rear weight bias.

Probably in the 57-59% rear wheel weight bias range.
