  • Audio OFF on start-up solution

I have owned my Corvette for close to two months and not once have I felt the urge of turning the audio on and listening to music rather than the engine and exhaust. This is my first V8! I keep telling people the sound system is probably the least useful feature of the car.

Unfortunately, the sound system automatically turns on and plays music every time I start the car, whether the music comes from my bluetooth-connected phone, or from the radio. Even if audio is off when turning the engine off and leaving the car, the default setting upon re-entry and engine start is audio ON. This requires me to push two buttons every time I start the car: the start button followed by the audio off or pause buttons. How annoying.

Apple won't let you turn their auto-play feature off (unless perhaps you subscribe to Apple Music). And it appears, neither does GM.

One solution I have found to avoid auto-play or having the sound on upon start up is to plug an EMPTY USB flash drive inside the armrest and ask the audio system to play music from it. The sound system will remain stuck on the empty USB flash drive, on a wild goose chase, and play nothing, regardless of volume settings. The USB flash drive selection remains unchanged after turning off and leaving the car, and therefore unchanged upon re-entry and start up. Moreover, this leaves the volume settings where they are needed for phone conversations.

If you push the volume knob down once quickly, it mutes the system. Have you tried holding the volume button down for several seconds until it turns the system off and then retry the startup procedure to see if it comes back on?

Exactly. Thanks pksjc for that key solution piece.

The problem with that solution is that it doesn't just turn off the audio, it turns of the infotainment system. No Nav, no CarPlay or Android Auto, nothing.

I very rarely listen to the radio either. Like you, I prefer just hearing the engine sounds.

But my '23 doesn't act like yours. I simply have the volume knob on the Infotainment screen turned all the way down and there is no radio sound when I start the car.

Where is this "default on" setting you refer to?

I too, dislike the music playing on start up. I'll try this solution in my '20 coupe. Occasionally when I have the car in acc mode doing something in the garage, the car connects via bluetooth to my phone which is in the house!

Actually, checkout the Chevrolet Infotainment System Manual and set the "Maximum Start-up Volume" to zero. See the section Sounds from page 54 excerpted from the infotainment system manual for the 2020 C8.

Patter88, I am not experiencing the same as OP but I often indulge my audiophile and push the boundaries of the stereo in my SR. I have found when turning the vehicle off I am often in the moment and fail to turn the volume down. This creates quite a surprise upon the next start-up (luck would have it is likely going to be early am) and subsequently blow my head off. I have noticed there is a measurable delay in the infotainment taking volume reduction inputs right at the start but you just provided me a solution to address my lack of accountability in turning it back to a reasonable volume before leaving the vehicle.

TY to OP for starting the thread and to patter for a great permanent solution!

That works, but if you listen to music off a thumb drive, as I do, it keeps "playing," going through your songs even though you can't hear it. The Corvette is the only car I've ever owned that doesn't just let you turn off the audio system.

Agreed. Turning the system off will persist into the next key or ignition cycle. Problem is it also turns off navigation.

I've tried turning the volume down all the way and it works but it also appears to turn down the volume of the notifications from my iPhone as well as the phone ringer volume, which remains like that after I leave the car. I have missed a few calls or texts on my phone after leaving the car because I forgot to turn the ringer volume on the iPhone back up.

I have yet to find that setting out. Thank you! I'll look for it, set it to zero and report back. Hopefully it won't also set the ringer on the iPhone to zero after I leave the car.

Yes that's the one drawback. But I always like having the radio on so it's pretty easy for me to use.
