  • C8s Jaguar 2022 ME Competitor

It is increasingly looking like Jaguar will come up with a 2022 Corvette ME competitor, called the “J.” Note that is appearing to be more NSX like, in that is allegedly has a 6 cyclinder combustion motor and two electric motors.

Legendary sports- and luxury-car maker Jaguar is cooking up a replacement for the F-Type that could take the fight straight to the forthcoming mid-engine Corvette (C8) with a mid-engine configuration of its own. According to Auto Express, the Jaguar “J-Type” as it could be called is expected to launch around 2022 with an rear-mid-engine layout. Exact powertrain details are still unknown, but the J-Type is expected to utilize hybrid power, with a V6 petrol engine and at least two electric motors – one on each axle. A pure-electric version could reportedly arrive sometime after launch.

Auto Express says that “high-ranking technicians” working on the forthcoming Jaguar J-Type have told the outlet that the current Acura NSX is being benchmarked, as that car also has a hybrid powertrain and a mid-engine layout. If all of this is true, the J-Type will be only the second production car in Jaguar’s more-than-80 years to have a mid-mounted engine, the other being the rare, relatively-obscure XJ220.

Chevrolet’s C8 Corvette will mark the sportscar’s first foray into mid-engine territory in more than 60 years of production – outside of the odd mid-engine concept here and there. Powering the car is expected to be a V8 engine with dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, meaning greater power density at the expense of larger exterior dimensions. There are no certain plans for hybrid power at this time, although rumor has it that the C8 Corvette’s most-potent production variant might produce 1,000 or more horsepower with the assistance of a battery pack and one or more electric motors.

The new mid-engine Corvette could enter production as early as September of next year, according to a recent report, and based on the frequency with which examples have been spied in the wild, we suspect that projection might not be too far off.

Love the looks of the jaguar f type but after driving one. No thanks...even for the proposed rear mid engine J type..

acuras twin turbo v 6 with 3 electric motors priced at 150 grand has been a huge flop.

751 sold in its first year in the USA and 75 year to date this year.

jaguars version of the NSX will sell just about as well.

    imo

Abysmal sales numbers. GM know those exact numbers for sure, and will make decisions accordingly.
Enjoying my Shadow gray C8. What a car it is.

Jaguar makes a good car, good looking and more. Not for me however. Doubt all who have a Corvette tattoo will choose to get one either.

Considering Jags reliability vs Honda, along with their cloning of a notable sales disaster, I'd say the success of this idea would be akin to that of a snowball in hell.

I would love to see a new mid-engine Jag enter production, especially something that looked like the C-X75. Competition is always a good thing. However, I'm more interested in the mid-engine Vette.
