  • 2020 Corvette PIN option HELP needed

I have placed an order for a 2020 Corvette and added the PIN option of customer selected VIN. I own the 285th built 1953 Corvette and thus wanted the 285th built 2020. I started the approval process needed for the PIN option months ago. The PIN option was approved and Mr. Harlan Charles the Corvette/Camaro Product Marketing Manager to whom I'm grateful, then took charge. At this point all I needed was the dealer to place the order and forward the order number to Mr. Charles. When work bench opened to allow dealers to place orders I went down selected my options and into the system my car went. The order number went to Mr. Charles who then later confirmed that I was on the "official VIN list for the 285th 2020 Corvette produced".
So this is where I need some help. I had only worked with a salesperson at the dealership from getting on the "list" to placing the order and receiving my deposit. Now all of a sudden I was contacted by the dealership General Manager with is email ...."Larry please reach out to Harlan and ask if this will supersede the list I have already created for my allocations. I am getting 13 in the initial phase, of which all of them are repeat, excited customers. So, mainly I would like to know if this adds an additional unit to my initial 13 C8’s or if it will be using up my one of my top 13?"
I have tried calling the dealership GM but he is always "not available" So before I go down to the dealership I would like to be armed with as much information about the ordering process as possible. My wife and I are worried that somehow he is going to screw us up! Thanks

I would imagine Harlan can help you more than everyone else can. This doesn’t sound like the normal buying process. How much will the custom VIN cost you?

So am I understanding this right, that if you purchase a VIN you can get the car earlier regardless of where you are on what list?

You sound like the perfect person for a customer selected VIN. How awesome the '53 would look garaged next to a VIN matching first year Mid Engine, congratulations! I have no information to add but I too think that since you have a dialog started with Harlan Charles, he's your problem solver.
        Good luck and again congratulations!

That is correct IF GM accepts your VIN request. They deny them for two primary reasons.

First you want a super desirable VIN, such as 0001 and GM is going to auction that one off for charity, # 0002 for the GM Heritage Center, etc.

Second, you are want a car with constraints. For example you want VIN # 222 and they are not ready to make Rapid Blue cars until a month or so down the line (when they are way past the VIN you wanted).

GM wants to grant as many $5,000 VIN options as possible, for might that option be pure gravy for them, i.e., they will accommodate all they can.

PIN option information.... This option is $5000.00 part of which goes to the Corvette Museum and the car is fully documented not just as it comes down the assembly line, much more detail than the standard Museum book that is currently suspended, it also has several extra QC checks. This option requires more than just checking the box when placing an order. You must fully document why you are requesting a certain VIN, once your reasons/documentation is received it must be approved by what seemed like every department, I think the janitor on the 16th floor of GM headquarters had to sign off. All of this needs to be done well in advance of placing an order. It isn't a new option ,been around for several years GM doesn't advertise it, sort of like the In & Out burger secret menu. We did it for obvious reasons not to try and get a 2020 earlier than anyone else, Even though I selected it I really think it's a bit overpriced.

Thanks 1953. Very interesting to learn all that is involved with that option. My talk is cheap, but in your case I can understand the VIN option being well worth its cost.
