Strike Facts Only Thread: No Political Nor Social Commentary Permitted

Our MECF hard and fast rule since day on on July 4th, 2018 was that no political noir social commentary would be allowed. That means no pro or anti union nor business comments. This is a car forum. Yesterday, day one of the strike, we looked the other way to allow such posts. No longer.

As the strike could affect our Corvettes and other GM products, this thread is opened on “fact based” basis only. As warned in writing yesterday, a single violation post containing political or social pro or anti commentary will get that person a minimum 48 hour temporary ban.

Today’s strike most important fact is that the targeted strikes against selected GM,Ford, and Stellantis plants are continuing. They assembly plants are a GM site in Wentzville, Missouri; a Stellantis center in Toledo, Ohio; and a Ford assembly location in Wayne, Michigan.

Theaw three sites assemble the following vehicles (thanks to O-Tag for providing this):

Lastly, the UAW has stated that they could change the assembly plants that are struck at any time. We noted recently that GM has announced that in addition to the targeted plants, that are early next week will result in a shut down part of another plant dye to parts shortages by the targeted plant being struck. That important announcement is repeated verbatim in the following post.

Already: Strike bleed over upcoming from three initial targeted plants.

In a statement, GM confirmed the potential shutdown of Fairfax: “It is unfortunate that the UAW leadership’s decision to call a strike at Wentzville Assembly has already had a negative ripple effect, with GM’s Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas and its 2,000 team members expected to be idled as soon as early next week."

Are the people who supply maintenance parts to GM dealers GM employees, and members of the UAW?

In other words, can a possible industry wide strike affect the ability to get timely scheduled maintenance and warranty work?

Sometimes yes and sometimes no, e.g., independent suppliers. However, if a independent supply who sells a majority of its parts to a plant that has been struck, without that struck plant needing more of that part(s), that supplier might be forced to take a “time out.” As a I believe it was Forbes magazine pointed out three weeks ago, a fair amount of those smaller suppliers could be seriously, perhaps fatally, consequently effected by a strike.

Does anyone know if the trucking firms will still be delivering and or will they not cross the picket lines. Will it just affect the 3 locations or will it be all locations.

This is so odd, at BGA the plant is open and workers are going to work, but is there a picket line too that JCI won't cross? If the workers are going in and working, then they are crossing their own picket line??????

We have confirmed that for those plant that are NOT struck, that transportation is continuing (did so yesterday). We have second hand information (probably at the 99% confirmation level) that the Teamsters will not be crossing any picket lines the UAW has set up, so completed vehicles at those targeted strike plants will sit there until they are no longer are no longer being struck.

No picket line at BGA. Business there is as usual. As we noted twice yesterday JCT is hauling away completed C8’s off of BGA grounds.

It's a game of "prisoner's dilemma" at this point, with a different twist. With all 3 manufacturers "maneuvering," the one that "cracks" first with the most generous offer will have to be matched by the other two.

That's quite a different dynamic than striking just one, and the targeted plant strategy theoretically allows the UAW strike fund to last longer.

I used to work at a union plant. Sometimes some union workers would picket without striking during negotiations and some other unions wouldn't cross the line. I wonder if that is an option for BG and other plants.

So would the counter strategy be if/when lack of cars/parts to dealers to then trigger a lockout by the big 3? That would then drain the strike fund quickly? Obviously, amicable resolution is preferred but I’m not very conversant on the chess pieces in play here.

I have a question for any of you that may possess accurate information related to the effect of the current strike on the BGA Plant and its ability to not only build the 2024 Corvette, but just as importantly to deliver the vehicles to the dealerships on a timely basis.

I ordered a 2024 Corvette from my local Chevrolet dealership on September 8th. My salesman has entered my order with GM and told me that based on the orders they currently have at their dealership their expected allocation for September should allow for my vehicle to be included in that allocation and likely produced in November and shipped to the dealership in either November or December.

I have a concern though! I recently read a post on a Corvette forum stating that the Jack Cooper Transport Company who is the exclusive transport company for all Corvette deliveries to the dealerships, would not be picking up and delivering any Corvettes at all. It was stated that they are a Teamsters Union company and they would not be crossing picket lines.

Bowling Green Assembly is not currently one of the targeted GM plants striking and picketing though, so I’m thinking that they would still pick up and deliver vehicles from that location. The article suggested otherwise though, that as a Teamster’s Union company in solidarity with the UAW they would not pick up any vehicles from BGA, simply because it is a GM plant, even though that plant is not currently striking and picketing. If that’s truly the case, then a lot of newly produced Corvettes are going to begin to stack up at BGA as that plant continues to assemble them and as the weeks go on with this current strike. Again though, BGA is not currently a targeted striking/picketing plant.

My concern is that I don’t particularly want my Corvette sitting around for 2 to 3 months in a storage lot exposed to the elements after it has been built. My last 2023 C8 shipped within 4 days after it was built and I had it within a week of of the the finished build day. Even if the strike is over before mine is built, there would likely be a huge backlog of vehicles at the plant which would impact the shipping time for any recent builds.

Does anyone have any accurate information as to whether Jack Cooper Transportation Co. will be continuing to pick up and deliver vehicles to the dealerships from BGA throughput this strike???

My salesman who is an older gentleman and has many years of experience with GM does not think there will be a problem. He could withhold my vehicle from this current September and even upcoming allocations until the strike is over, but I don’t think he’s going to do. I can tell he is rather cynical about all the information that comes across the various forums and he tells me not to let it concern me but I believe the forum is a good source of information.
