  • Why isn’t the rear camera standard equipment on all C8’s ?

I see that if you order the 1LT trim level you don’t get the roof rear view camera. Tell me I’m wrong on this. No way can you function in that car without a wider view rear camera.maybe make it a separate option .
Safety first IMO. It should be standard on all cars period. Even the side mirrors should have side assistance in traffic. I don’t want the 2LT trim. I do want the Z51 package ( over heating solved ) and lift. But with these options and the 2LT I bet I’m at $78K+.doc fee

I believe that Federal Law says all cars must have rear view cameras now.

When you configure a 1LT it removes the roof camera in the picture. Yes in 2018 back up cameras are required. I’m talking about the roof camera that assist drivers in traffic. Not sure one could change lanes with this limited view they created . 2LT it’s included. Need more info on what that roof camera shows the driver.

There seems to be two cameras involved? One in the mirror and one on the infotainment screen? I'm confused?

Is the "backup camera" that we know from the past standard...and then there is the new 'constant view camera' in the rear view mirror in addition?

If I read it correctly the rear view camera displays in the infotainment screen on 1lt and in the mirror on other levels with a wider view.

The 2LT and up seem to have some better camera features, but the 1LT does have a rear view camera. GM would probably be in a lot of trouble if they released a $60k midengine car without one

The devis is in the details, I'm afraid. Read the terminology, which suggests what we know right now. The 1LT offers the "HD Rear Vision Camera" (which displays in the touch screen) and the 2LT says it has the "Rear Camera Mirror".

The wider view will be an interesting subjective topic...as in how much wider, and are things really easy to see in the small space of the mirror? Do we know for sure that the 2lt eliminates the base camera in the screen, or is it possible that on 2lt you have both. (since the back up cameral would only be on in reverse?

Don’t know all the details but remember Tadge saying the upper level camera had a zoom feature so you could see if the car behind you had a light bar.

You are correct I just got off the phone with the Corvette sales guy that was at the reveal. He’s mister corvette in Atlanta area. He confirmed what you just wrote. I’ll probably just stay with the 1LT + Z51 ,lift and black wheel option. This clears up the camera issue. Thanks all

But don't forget that the 1LT back up camera is only displayed in the infotainment screen while backing up. It's not like you can use it to judge surrounding traffic while driving.

That's why I agreed with your original post. For a car with such claustrophobic rear quarters, I can't really see traffic with the usual shoulder check. The mirror camera should be standard on all Vettes in my opinion.

I agree and wish they made it a stand alone option. Don’t need heads up and heated thus and that. Atlanta area not much winter and I’m at Daytona anyways in late January. 24 Rolex. Yeah the C8R will debut.

I think maybe you are misreading. Believe the 1LT will have rear camera while driving but displayed in infotainment screen.

Maybe, but I suspect it's more GM's way of meeting the current regulations for a basic back up camera in all new vehicles. In their other product lines, does the back up camera still display in the infotainment screen once you've shifted out of reverse? I mean, you need that screen to control all sorts of other things. I can't recall for sure how other GM cars & trucks work, so hopefully you or somebody else can chime in with their experience.

All cars must have a backup camera that shows in reverse. Not a rear view camera that shows while you're driving down the road. And the backup camera has to be mounted low at the very rear of the car, so you can see if there's child back there. The roof mounted camera wouldn't meet the requirement for a backup camera.

Originally posted by Plasboy View Post

That's an interesting possibility, but I don't think so. As MikeC8 says, the configurator removes the roof camera when you select 1LT. That's a conscious decision by GM, not accidental. Time will tell.

As to the original question, why? To keep the base price below $60K. To meet that price point, some things have to give. Would be nice to have the option of the rear view mirror camera without having to spring for everything else in the 2LT package, though.

You know how the C7 got small upgrades each of the first few model years? GM's not going to be able to keep the base price below $60K forever. So I predict than by year 3 the rear view mirror camera will be standard in the 1LT, too.
