  • Heads-Up for those who purchased the Battery Protection Pkg...

    Hi Folks, just a heads-up for those who purchased the Battery Protection Package with your Corvette or plan to do so with a new C8 order;

The unit is made by CTEK as most of us know. Well the one I got with my 2022 C8 worked flawlessly over the winter and up until a week ago when it died. I know it died because I have another CTEK maintainer that I use on my C2 and it works perfectly on the C8.

I contacted CTEK about warranty, as their units are warrantied for 5 years. I heard back from them that they re-brand their products for several automotive brands including our Corvette brand and that I need to take it to the Chevrolet dealer where the car was purchased for warranty. Okay, all well and good, I take it to my local dealer whom said they had never had this happen yet and to wait to hear from them. Well, yesterday the dealer phoned me and said that GM requires that I bring the car in so they can hook the car up through the OBD port with the faulty charger plugged in. They were apologetic about it and said they didn't understand why, but this is GM's policy. What a PITA. So the moral of the story for me is this; I wouldn't have ordered this with the car and instead I would have just bought the CTEK MSX 5.0 on Amazon for $89.95

Just thought I would pass this on..

    Cheers,

    -Gaz

Thanks for posting this. Hope the dealer gets the issue sorted out for you. I’ll be sure to buy the CTEK MSX 5.0 instead of the factory battery protection option. Appreciate the insight!

Thanks for the info. Mine worked for a number of months on my C8 and just recently died. I’ll take it to the dealer and see if I can get it replaced.

I would take the CTEK unit to the dealer as they advised and let them perform the analysis.

You won't know if somehow the CTEK failure could lead to future gremlins in your electrical system if you don't let them diagnose the car.

They may uncover something that will result in an improved CTEK, which will benefit any of us who have one.

I’ve had my GM one I bought over the parts counter 2 1/2 years on my 20. Use it every time I’m not going to drive the C8 the next day. Has worked fine. Going to use it on my Z which is being delivered next week. Maybe I got a good one.

just a heads up that the model on amazon is $102 with the cigarette plug adapter (like the one that comes from chevy). the $89 version has gator clips.

Thanks GarryL. That does seem very cumbersome indeed.

All that red tape to replace a $100 battery maintainer? I don't think it would be worth my time to go through the entire nonsensical procedure to get another one from GM for free.

I am willing to spend a buck where it gets me value, but I never considered buying the Corvette CTEK because its "official". Its the most basic CTEK unit with a Corvette logo. You can do better.

I bought the Amazon version, two years in and it works fine. No way I would pay for the overpriced GM version, it was not even remotely a thought.

Indeed, and what I did for $14 more, I got the cigarette lighter adaptor and I quite like it better than the stock one because I was able to mount the unit on the wall where I prefer it.

I bought the CTEK MUS 4.3 in the secondary market when I got my 2014 C7. Used it for six years on the C7 and now have used it on my 2020 C8 since picking it up. Never a prob. PS, the "never a prob" also applies to everything else about my C7 and C8.

I don't understand... the Battery Protection package if bought with the car is a $100 option. The similar device with the cigarette plug is $102 on amazon. Did you find it for a less expensive price? (I'm always looking for a good deal!)

It was cheaper, $80 in 2021.

The "Corvette branded" CTEK (AKA "Battery Protection Package) is an entry-level model with fewer features than regular CTEKs costing the same or less.

My Corvette branded CTEK quit too. CTEK customer service was not helpful and said to return it to Chevy. I have 5 Battery Tender brand chargers that are over 10 years old and are all still faithfully working.
