He commented you need a 4 post lift to do work on the C8 but it would be interesting to see someone drop the engine or transaxle using a 4 post lift.

      Thanks for the post!

      Yes the Corvette is dead.

Even though the Corvette faithful may not like my comment but the reason I own a C8 Stingray is because the Corvette is dead. Now I enjoy taking my C8 to the track as much as my AMG GTR experience or frankly the GT3 RS at the track. I track atleast 40 days a year and I have enjoyed for 2 years now tracking the heck out of my C8. I have over 10,000 track miles on my C8 and the car is awesome. But frankly I never considered the previous gen Corvettes before. Can't wait for my Z06 but as high up on the couple of lists I am on it may never occur.

Interesting article. I wonder if GM/Chevrolet mused over giving the C8 another name than "Corvette". Might have been an opportunity lost, but had they done that lots of Corvette fans would feel angry and left out.

Personally, I'm glad they kept the Corvette name alive, even though I agree that the C8 is nothing like any Corvette that came before.

I have to strongly disagree with his premise and his math. On, not the inflation adjusted part, that's accurate. And as the author himself points out, the base Stingray is cheaper than the 2001 in constant dollars. If the 2001 was something attainable by the lower management guy in the next cubicle, so is the C8.

He says it took from 1953 to 2009 to get a Corvette over $100 grand. That would be $140,000 in today's dollars. Given that it's been 14 years since then, that the Z06 and E-Ray will both leave the driver of that ZR-1 crying into his beer (in terms of sheer performance), AND both are cheaper than the ZR-1 was, I'm not sure his argument holds water.

And the statement that "double the number of Corvettes live above $100,000 as live below" is, at best, disingenuous. Double the number of models are over $100K, but those cars make up only a tiny fraction of Corvettes sold, and will never outsell the Stingray.

His whines about maintenance are exaggerated, too. I can change the oil and filter on my car without a lift. I could change the DCT filter without a lift if I wanted to. Everything else on the engine is accessible from below, and while a lift would be handy something as simple as the QuickJack will suffice. And, of course, you don't need to access the engine nearly as often as you did in a C5, since plugs last far, far longer these days. Even changing the air filter isn't that hard.

Luggage capacity? A lot less than the bloated C5, certainly. But easily enough for two people for a couple of weeks if you pack soft luggage. If you make a habit of carrying the SAE's rectangular boxes, then yeah, it's not very good.

He clearly set out to write an article lambasting the C8, and chose (and skewed) his facts to make the point. Article should be subtitled "I can't afford a C8, but I do have an old ZR-1, so the C8 isn't a "real" Corvette.

I wholeheartedly disagree! The Corvette is now what it should have been from day 1! Corvette's first Chief Engineer Zora Arkus Duntov had envisioned this from the beginning, but didn't live long enough to see it to fruition. He knew the mid-engine layout was best for traction, handling, etc. back in 1952! He pushed for it, but never saw it. Several prototypes were made, but the bean counters kept it from the public's availability until now. Tadje and his crew wrung out all the performance potential from the rear drive platform and was finally able to build what the Corvette was always meant to be...a world beater! Thanks Tadje and Corvette Team!! This IS the REAL Corvette!!!

I've shopped for and test drove the C4, C5, and C6. Loved them, especially the C5/C6, but not feverishly enough to stop me from cross shopping and ultimately deciding on non-Corvette alternatives. The C8 has no alternatives that can match the feverishness I have for it (currently on order). Also the C5/C6 drive and feel closer to the C8 than the C4 to the C5/C6. I instantly felt C5/C6 DNA in reminiscence when I drove a C8. Makes sense given Tadge was heavily steeped in engineering the C5-C8. Either the C4 is a Corvette and the C5+ aren't, or the C5+ are and the C4 isn't, or they're all Corvettes doing what Corvettes have always done: Evolve. Whether that be in layout architecture, model variant pricing, etc. That article was written with apparent ownership and recency bias toward the C5. He should try comparing C1-C8 to see how many times Corvette "died." Starting with the C1 when it went from being exclusively a straight-6 then "died" for a radical change to a V8.

No matter what name you call it, it still stands as the great car that it is. I'm glad it "died" if that's what it took to elevate to the next level and get me more feverish than any prior gen could.

The Corvette is NOT dead. The C8 is the culmination of 70 years of evolution...it is Zora's dream come true.

For the first two or three years each new generation of corvette usually gets raving reviews. Then about year 3 or 4 these types of articles come out to garner more clicks since saying the latest and greatest corvette is the best for more than 2 or 3 years doesn’t garner the public’s attention.

that’s when they start nitpicking some crapola…

I’ve seen it in every recent generation ..

just smile and laugh at these critics. They mean well. They just need more attention.

like little children they don’t care if it’s negative or positive attention…they just know they need more attention.

"But frankly I never considered the previous gen Corvettes before." Except for C7 I didn't either. If by "Corvette is dead" you mean the kind of car you got before C7, or for sure C8, then you may be right. This will probably anger many on here, and I don't mean to. Just MY opinion. Doesn't make it better than anyone elses!! :-)
