  • First Oil Change

I know that last year GM extended the time for the first oil change for 2020-2022 C8's to 24 months with the mileage cap remaining at 7,500. My question is whether this extended to the 2023 C8 model year? (My dealer's salesperson was not sure.) Any documentation would also be appreciated.

    Thanks

Good question. Anyone know for sure? Or perhaps calling your dealership tomorrow if no one posts below.

Not that this helps, but I have noticed a lot of websites, stores, articles, and script that pertain to the C8 and label it for the “2020-2022”. Typically with further reading and searching, that somewhere in the same article, manufacture spec, etc. you will find it includes 2023 as well. I would assume it’s the same as, however you know what an assumption can get you LOL! Seriously though, the lack of update and/or details can be rather frustrating when looking for specifics these days. Makes you think it’s another example of lack of work ethic that has found its way into everything 🤨

Yep. I agree. My salesperson said he would check into it, but I doubt that will happen.

With as much consternation there is about changing the DCT filter earlier than 7500 miles and the associated TechLink article I doubt GM would move the free change period back to 1 year.

I assume that you're aware that your oil life display counts down 1-year since it was reset, presumably at PDI. At the end of 1 year, it will be at 0%, and you are required change the oil every year, even if you've only put a few miles on the car.

Mine is at 1% since we took delivery on 3/22/22, but with only 4200 miles, and I'm paying for the 1st oil change this week. I'll be taking it back for the complimentary service near the 7500-mile mark or near the end of year 2, whichever comes first, because the DCT canister filter change is more expensive. I'll also have the oil changed again to get the maintenance schedule back in synch.

I agree that is almost certain that 2-year policy for complimentary service remains in effect for the 23MY.

That's not quite right. GM extended the time for the FREE (included) first service to two years. They did NOT change the requirement to do an oil and filter change at 1 year or 7500, whichever comes first. To maintain the warranty, you MUST change the oil and filter when the OLM tells you to, which will be no more than 1 year or 7500 miles.

If you're not near 7500 miles at the 1 year mark, you should pay for the oil change, and then use the free service when the DCT filter needs to be changed, at 7500 miles.

I'm certain the 2 year timeframe for the free service remains at 2 years, but you can ask your dealer's Corvette service advisor (not salesman) to verify.

Note the parts I outlined in red, below. It says 2020 and newer, not 2020-2022. And the second outline sentence makes clear you still need to follow the service as outlined in the OM, which says 1 year / 7500 miles for the oil and filter change:

Yes, I am aware of the countdown timer and will follow it if I don't have 7500 miles in the first year.

If you take it in at 4200 miles - What about the GM document that states that the oil change at the "1st service visit" is free. If you take it in and pay for the 1st visit, could they not state that when you take it in at 7500 miles it is the 2nd visit and therefore the oil change is not free (even though they will change the DCT canister for free)?

One more thing - what difference is there if you pay for the first oil change and get the 2nd oil change free with the free DCT canister, or if you get the free first oil change and pay for the second oil change with the free DCT canister replacement. Isn't it the same thing from an out-of-pocket dollar standpoint?

It's just one of those things you have to figure out yourself.

Only one service is free, so you have to choose whether you want that to include the more expensive 7500-mile DCT flush and canister filter change, which is mileage- not time-based, or use it for the first oil change and pay for the DCT filter change later.

Forum dealer, Criswell, did advise me that most of their customers did not have 7500 miles at the end of year 1, so they opted to pay for the first oil change and come back close to 7500 miles in year 2 to have the DCT filter change done along with a 2nd oil change, free of charge. That was the primary reason GM extended the free service to 2 years. It was originally just 1 year.

If you take your free service for just the oil change, then you pay for the 2nd visit for DCT canister filter change. If you change the filter canister early, GM states you are required to do it again at 7500 miles.

I thought the DCT filter change is free at 7500 miles? If that is so, then whether I get a free oil change in year one (without DCT change), or pay for year 1 and get a free 2nd oil change at year 2 (and get the free DCT filter change at that time), it's the same thing. Am I missing something?

You get one free service that includes an engine oil/filter change and a DCT filter change that needs to be used within 2 years. There is one dealer reimbursement code for the service and it can't be split up however you might be able to work something out with your dealer.

Yes, you are missing something. Only one service is free. If you use that on an oil change only, you do not get another free service for the DCT filter at 7500 miles.

What you also may be missing is that if you use your free service for an oil change and DCT filter change well short of 7500 miles, you have to do it again at 7500 miles and pay for it. That is spelled out clearly in a GM service bulletin.

GM is adamant that the DCT needs 7500 miles to be properly broken in, at which time they want the filter changed. Thus, you come out way ahead by paying for the relatively inexpensive first oil change well under 7500 miles, and waiting until close to 7500 miles or near the end of year 2 to do both free of charge.

The DCT service is far more expensive.

This is the first response that actually explains that you get the free COMBINED service for the oil change and DCT filter change and it cannot be split up. (Otherwise it would not make a difference.)

Thanks for that clarification. Now it makes sense.

If you take it in at 4200 miles - What about the GM document that states that the oil change at the "1st service visit" is free. Multiple people have paid for the first change, and then had the free service done later. Some dealers even recommend that. As long as the dealer doesn't submit a claim to GM for the reimbursement the first time, they can file it for the second.

Nope. The DCT filter change costs ~ $200. More at some dealers.

You gt ONE free service. Not one free oil change and one free DCT filter change. If you do them both at the same time, both are free. But if you use the free service for an oil and filter change, then the much more expensive DCT filter change is no longer free.
