  • Extended warranty

i have a 2022 HTC and am seriously considering getting an extended warranty since I have had two transmission problems within 20,000 miles.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

Dennis Fichtner specializes in the GM-backed extended warranty, and usually has the lowest prices when not purchasing new from your dealer at time of first sale.

I haven't seen a recent post from him, but this is the latest info I can find on him.

I have heard from two MECF members that they got a significantly better price (last six months for both) by contacting Todd Sutherland @ MacMulkin @ 603.888.112, Ext 119

Nothing against Dennis for I bought two from him (well-executed each one).

I got a significantly better deal (several hundred dollars) through Dennis. You would think Todd would have at least matched it since I was purchasing my car from MacMulkin and could have easily added that amount to the cash I was already sending, but he didn't even offer.

I talked with macmulkin a few months ago about this. They will be at or better than anyone, I plan to give them my business because they were great to work with and I want to support dealers selling at msrp. Even if they were a bit higher, I would still do it. My two cents

Todd by far is the least expensive of the two.

I’m just at 1100 status so have not had to make this decision yet- have folks found that the warranty pricing is more cost effective if purchased as part of the overall new car paperwork or rely on the factory warranty then purchase the extended GM warranty before that expires ?

There are a number of threads about this. In general, most people will never get back what they pay for the contract. That's by definition, given that the dealer, the administrator, and the underwriter all make a profit even after paying out claims. If you're one of the unlucky ones who has a very expensive problem, you'll be glad you got it. Otherwise, you'll probably feel like it was a waste of money. I've linked some other threads that go into a lot more detail.

Note that the DCT is already warranted for 5 years / 60,000 miles. How long do you plan to keep the car?

I think it's a wash. If you buy (as an example) a 7 year plan when you buy the car, the price takes into account that the company probably won't pay anything out for the first 3 - 5 years because of the factory warranty. If you buy a 4 year warranty at the end of 3 years, the company prices it knowing coverage will effectively start immediately. The two plans will probably cost about the same amount.

What can't be predicted is the actual problem history. If, during the first 3 years, the model turns out to have man more problems than expected, the company might raise the price by the end of your 3 year B2B warranty. OTOH, if the model proves more reliable, the price could drop.

In the past, I bought extended warranties on two cars. On a Hyundai, I probably broke even. On a Honda, I didn't have claims anywhere close to the cost of the policy.

What you're really buying is insurance (literally - these plans are all underwritten by insurance companies). Like the insurance on your car or your house, you'll probably never get back what you pay in. But if your house burns down, your car gets totaled, or your engine blows up after 5 years, you'll be glad you paid for it.

i have only gotten two extended warranties for cars, both for Corvettes. The fist was in 1994 when I bought a lightly used '93 C4 ZR-1. At my request, the owner was able to buy the 7 year 60,000 mile GMEPP warranty and I added the cost to the purchase price. Kept the car for 13 years but never made a claim. Still the LT5 DOHC engine was a new high performance design and I felt it a worthwhile investment at the time; over the years the LT5 has proven bulletproof. The second was on my 2016 Z06 with its high performance supercharged 650 HP V8. Same rationale, and in this case I did make a claim when the LT4 broke a valve spring. No cost to me under my zero deductible Chevrolet Protection Plan (bought from Dennis Fichtner). A key factor in my decisions was that in each case the warranty was transferable to a new owner if I decided to sell the car (which of course I didn't, but still...). For me at the time and on those cars it seemed a prudent investment. But like any insurance, it only really counts if you need to use it. --Bob

I recently purchased a GM extended plan from Dennis who was less expensive of the two. I had purchased many plans from him in the past. The money difference between the gentleman was less than fifty dollars.

Interesting rrigia, A fellow C8 corvette owner had an HTC 2022, same color combo as yours. After 2 trans issues and slightly over 4k miles,he lost confidence in his C8 , went to GM and they bought the car back from him, no loss. His issue is that he is looking for a new C8, which MSRP has gone up and interest rates have also.

                        Good luck

                        p.s. I have a 2020, 7500 miles no issues

I would be one of those folks who did significantly better with Todd S @ MacMulkin. I too have had previous positive experience with Dennis, but this time it was an easy decision, and super easy with Todd.

I bought a 84 month, 56k Platinum plan with $0 deductible. Bought it with just under 10k miles on my car in mid October. My C8 is a 2020.

Question: Can the GM extended plan be bought for Florida residents now? In the past I was told that it is not available for Florida.

One question: How much would the valve spring repair (I'm assuming it was after the 5 year drivetrain warranty, or it would have cost you nothing) have cost compared to the cost of the warranty?
