Stingray oil?

  • Stingray oil?

I’m feeling a little dumb. I need to put a quart of oil in my Stingray. The OM clearly states to use Mobil1 0-40 with DexosR.
I’m looking at oils on Amazon and see Dexos on some of the pictures, however they don’t say “DexosR” specifically.
They also seem to say formulated for European cars, and one says for “Supercars.”
    Am I overthinking this?

No; you are neither dumb nor overthinking things. . You are asking a good, highly appropriate question. Use the 0W-40 Mobil Supercar oil only for your LT2.

Just as for the LT6 now that it became available, one should only use the 5W-50 Supercar oil.

      John is right on!

      2023 SR Manual. Pages 242-245

Viscosity Grade Use SAE 5W-50 viscosity grade engine oil.

"Engine oil meeting the dexosR specification of the proper SAE viscosity grade. Mobil 1 dexosR full synthetic is recommended. See Engine Oil (5.5L LT6 Engine) 0 242 or Engine Oil (6.2L LT2 Engine) 0 245)

DexosR and Dexos2 are the same spec. Dexos 1 (or just plain Dexos) is different. There are currently only 3 Dexos 2/R oils that meet Corvette specs:

        Mobil 1 ESP 0W-40
Mobile 1 Supercar 0W-40 (exactly the same oil, just rebranded because "Supercar" sounds so much better)
Mobile 1 ESP X3 (branded as for European cars, but it meets the same Dexos 2 spec as the first two oils, and may be marginally superior)

But if you added a quart of regular Dexos in the right viscosity, don't sweat it. It'll be fine. Oh, just to be sure: you did check the oil level with the oil hot and the engine running, right?

Careful. 5W-50 is ONLY specified for the Z06, not the Stingray. The correct oil for the Stingray is 0W-40. Page 248 of the manual linked above. Pages 242-245 are for the LT6 engine.

Right now Speedway Motors seems to have the best deal on 0-40w Dexos R Mobil 1 super car oil at under $60 for case (6 quarts) with free shipping for over $149 order. Three cases = two plus changes.

Swagglesmith - just curious if anything unusual happened to cause your C8 to get a quart low on oil? I don’t remember reading any posts about the engine burning oil but could have missed them.
Have other owners had to add oil between changes ?

              Thanks

Nothing unusual I have noticed. I checked the oil about every thousand miles and noted a slight decrease down the normal range. Now at 4Kmiles it is just at the minimum line.

The owner's manual does state to check oil at every gas fill up, especially in the early miles of owning the vehicle. Unless I am recalling incorrectly (totally possible). I assumed this is due to seals soaking, some possible burning, etc. I would think a full quart is a lot but I too have been checking regularly and plan to do so again once the snow decides to stop dropping in Western New York and I can enjoy the vehicle again.

I did a google search for "Mobile 1 Supercar 0W-40" after reading this thread the other day, and ordered a few quarts from the big-box retailer that starts with "W". The text description was "Mobil 1 ESP 0W-40", but the photo showed "Mobil 1 ESP Formula 0W-40" (the correct oil).
The product that I actually received yesterday was "Mobil 1 Supercar 0W-40" (which is supposed to be the same as the ESP Formula).

                    Addendum:
My cost was about a half dollar more per quart than undy, but I only had to buy 4 quarts to obtain free shipping.

I bought 4 cases from them (exactly 3 oil changes). They gave me a $10 coupon with free shipping. To my door it was 10 bucks a quart.

I got this from Mobil a while back. Looks like I can use either in my 22.

                        Bob,

                        Thanks for writing to us.

The Mobil 1 ESP Formula 0W-40 used by GM as the factory fill in 2019 and newer Corvette, V8 Camaro, and Cadillac CTS-V engines has been rebranded as Mobil 1 Supercar 0W-40. In addition to the rebranding of the oil, GM has issued technical bulletins allowing the substitution of the new DexosR spec in place of Dexos2 in high performance gasoline engines, only. It is currently available under the following 6 digit part number.

                        126870 MOBIL 1 SUPERCAR 0W-40 6X1 UQL

The Mobil 1 ESP X3 0W-40 carries a GM Dexos2 approval, however, so it is still a safe option as well, as long as your owner's manual refers to Dexos2.

If I can help with any other motor oil questions, please respond to this email or call me at 1-800-ASK-MOBIL (800-275-6624).

                        Thank you for choosing Mobil,

In almost 15k miles and two oil changes at the dealership, I have not seen my oil level go down at all. I usually check it right after it's been changed to make sure the level is correct, and then I check periodically, including right before my next oil change, when it's always still been at the top hash mark.

This is the correct oil, but I believe this is the older packaging before it was renamed "Supercar".

I like others would worry about having to add oil in between oil changes. My C8, nor my C7 for seven years and close to 70K miles and I never added any oil. Heck my 2001 HD Duramax with almost 300K doesn't use oil between changes at 7500 miles.

The baby was born one year ago today. She's going in for her first diaper change tomorrow :. 4300K Miles not a drop shy.

Personally, if i found it down a quart I'd throw any synthetic 0W-XX in there rather than have it be low while shopping around for the exact oil, but that's just me.
