  • Can I share the same FOB with 2 cars?

The title sums it up. Soon we will have 2 C8's (my wife's and mine) which for practical purposes could be interchangeable. It would be very convenient to pick up one FOB on the way out and take the car that is more conveniently located (it will be a while before both cars can fit in the garage...) Can I pair the two FOBs with both cars?
(ignoring the fact that the hardware keys won't match of course)

    That's a good question. I'm not positive, but I don't think so.

The dealer can completely reprogram the car and fob(s) to match each other, but I think that creates a whole new code pairing. I don't think the dealer can reprogram car A to use the same code pairing as car B. But the dealer service department can certainly answer the question.

Yes, the more I think about it and I don't think it can work. It could but I don't think Chevrolet would want it to let it happen. Otherwise, when you click to remotely start the car or open the doors, you do not want both cars to start.
I do not use remote start but it would be nice to simply be able to open the door with the door switch while the FOB is in my pocket and start it.
The pairing requires the FOB to be in the car at a specific location. That is probably because communication between the FOB and the car is bi-directional, unlike older FOBs where the car reads the FOB's code to recognize it but the FOB had no idea (I had an old Nissan Altima and a Maxima that could use the same FOB, but that was a long time ago) Probably nowadays the FOB is programmed with the car's code so that it can only be paired with one car.

My car is still stuck at 3,000. I just got an email from Chevrolet this morning (I have registered to get emails when the status changes) to tell me that they have not forgotten about me (in essence...) and to be patient. Would have been nice to know what the delay was for, but my dealer said the 4 cars they ordered the same day are all 3000 still. My understanding is that the other 3 are Z51, mine is not. Only option of significance is mag ride.

Not the same, but I had a 1966 Dodge way back when, and my best friend had a '65. His key would open and start my car, but not the other way around. Go figure.

Even if you did pair to both by the time you got home the fob would not work with the other car because it wasn't around when the car and the fob renegotiated a new code which they do every time the fob is used.

Ok, that makes sense. Yes it's pretty obvious that there should be some sort of two way negotiation to pair the fob to the car exclusively.

I often start my car from as much as 200 feet away and can lower the top from a considerable distance. Unless you have a seriously large garage, even if it were possible it wouldn’t be practical.

Yes, the range is pretty amazing.

I typically do not use the FOB buttons on my cars. The FOB is in my pocket and I press on the door or truck buttons to open. Easy enough. My wife does the same, with the added issue that if she ever wanted to use the FOB buttons, she have to first locate the FOB in her purse... nuf said!

However, I may use the remote start since it is likely my car will be outside for a while until I deal with the garage. It's a 1971 vintage two car garage, i.e. not very big. It will be very tight with two C8s in there... My wife's a 1LT, so no folding mirrors.

Been there! lol. One car had to be backed in. (Mine of course) and one straight in so the drivers doors were accessible, but the passenger sides were not.

That's exactly what I was thinking Of course my car will be the one backed in. I feel you...

Before even getting to that point, there are a bunch of things that are going to have to move out of the garage, including the motorcycle and a fridge, a large toolbox, a storage cabinet for bike stuff and a shelf. We are talking about how big of a shed we are going to need and where to put it. The best location (as far as being away from the view from the windows) is in the back and unfortunately inaccessible by truck to put a prefab shed there, so either we put a prefab shed somewhere else where it will be more visible (not a fan, even though surprisingly my wife came up with the idea) or we build one from scratch where we want it (not a fan either). I live on a corner lot so I do have more options but still

This is really getting off topic (LOL) but, since you live on a corner lot, can you not temporarily remove part of your fence on the side to get a prefab shed in?

If you have one close by Tuff Sheds offer sheds built in modular form that can be carried to the backyard and assembled.
