Glad I found this post. The cable on my driver side broke last weekend. Just as described above. I had the top down and was parked. Put the top up and discovered the top wouldn't close. I dropped it off at the dealer yesterday and have not hear anything on timing of repair. I can only hope that it doesn't take as long as some have already experienced.

Medicus1 - did the Corvette Tech give an opinion as to why the cable broke? Any thoughts for those of us that have HTC's? Or is it just "Luck of the Draw"?

What is the manufacture date of the cars that had the cable issue? I thought I read on this or another forum that they were switching to a different cable supplier.

I had a failure this week on the driver side retraction cable. My dealer said the cable is currently on back order and did not provide an eta. Said it could be 2 weeks or 2 moths. I will elevate it if more than another week.

Sorry for my delayed response! My technician had no clue why the cable broke. Mine was the first case they had seen. Probably just bad luck. The C8 HTC mechanism seems overly complicated IMO, especially when compared to other sports cars.

              My 2021 C8 was built in 12/2020.

Medicus1 - thanks. BTW, 99% of all the tops for M-B, Porsche, Lexus, C8, etc. are manufactured by a German supplier - Webasto. I am no structural engineer but I bet that they would be most interested in making our HTC top as simple as possible so as to fail as infrequently as possible, but found over time and testing that they (I can only assume) had to make it the way they did to accomodate GM's (presumed) requirement that it operate both speedily and safely. IDK - just my 2 cents.........either way - my 2022 (took delivery in Oct 2021) now has 3700+ miles and countless "up and down" of said top. I LOVE my HTC!

                  In the FWIW category...
I never put my top up or down while moving...The amount of air turbulence pushing on the tonneau cover at 20-30 mph would be strong (IMO). My car is a 2021 with 14,000 miles and LOTS of down/up cycles with no issues.

I do, occasionally, raise or lower the top while in motion. I'm at near 16,000 miles without issue. If the top isn't fully seated (open or closed), the car limits top speed to 58 mph, so I think there's a lot of safety margin in the 30 mph limit to initiate top motion.

There are other cars that have a similar operation to the nacelles, including some Ferraris, so that complexity isn't unique to the C8. There used to be a lot of complaints about the PRHT on some Mercedes models. Whether those were made by Webasto or not I don't know. But given the number of C8 HTCs on the road now, problems seem to be pretty rare. I'm happy not to have hydraulics operating the top. The only failure I ever had on my C7 was a hydraulic leak that sprayed fluid all over the passenger seat when I raised the top.

What made it worse was that it happened a couple of days before I picked up my C8*, and was about to sell the C7. So I had to fix it before I could sell it.

                        * I literally drove into the service bay to drop off the C7, and walked into the showroom to pick up my C8.

Can somebody provide the part number for the replacement cable? It may come in handy down the road.

I'm told that you can zip tie that nacelle cover down to allow the top to close in the event a cable breaks. Maybe I'll throw a couple of long ones in the car just in case.

Sounds interesting. Where exactly do the Zip ties attach? If this solution gets one to the dealership with top up, it is a great interim solution.

The zip ties were a huge help when my cable broke, and were the only way to put the top up while I waited several days for my service appointment. The picture below shows where I placed two zip ties (blue arrows); you can ignore the large red arrow, as that was for my service advisor.

Living in AZ, I put the top down almost daily all year round. Aside from that one issue with the nacelle cover cable, I haven’t had any problems with my HTC function. This is the first convertible I’ve ever owned, and I’m so glad that my wife convinced me to go for the HTC version.
