  • ME To Have HD Backup Camera System

Looking highly probable that the 2020 C8 will have a high definition backup camera system. Not yet 100%, but looking like betting folks....

General Motors is upgrading the backup camera systems across its vehicle portfolio from standard to high definition (HD). According to research by GM Authority, a total of 11 GM models of the 2019 model year are equipped offer an HD rear vision camera, while another 11 should offer it for the 2020 model year.

The move from SD to HD adds more pixels to the screen and is somewhat analogous to moving from 720p to 1080p, albeit not precisely in those numbers (since auto screens utilize a different kind of resolution rating system than a television).

2019 GM vehicles with available HD backup camera:

2020 GM vehicles confirmed to offer HD backup camera:
2020 GM vehicles expected (but not confirmed) to offer HD backup camera:
The upgraded resolution is made possible by joining various factors, including the automaker upgrading the video processing systems for in-dash screens, and Chevy’s Monte Doran tells us that the end result is a crisper, clearer image.
Bowl View, one of 15 camera views part of the 2020 Silverado HD Advanced Trailering System, provides a rear-facing 3D surround view, giving a sense of the height of objects surrounding the vehicle, useful for low-speed backing maneuvers.

What’s more, the benefits of the upgraded resolution also carry over to the vehicle’s other camera-based systems, such as the 360-degree Surround Vision or the trailer-mounted systems on GM’s new pickup trucks, but not to the Rear Camera Mirror – which runs on an entirely different system that relies on a different camera and a different, in-mirror display.

Good, it should have a quality camera system and hopefully it will include the over view (surroundings view) with it! I really like that feature!

The 2020 Corvette could well set the industry standard for visibility for a sports car. Borrowing/using Cadillac’s pioneering systems, and some of its own, with the camera we know will be on the rear of the halo bar for the HT vert, atr top of the rear window ‘frame” for the coupe, we probably will have much better visibility than we are used to.

I am kooking forward to having good camera system components to see around the buttresses.

Although not listed in the first post, our 2019 Chevrolet Traverse has the back-up camera system as depicted in the first photo. The front view camera also provides the 360 degree view at speeds below 5 mph. The “birds eye” view is very helpful in parking lot applications. The inside rear view mirror “toggles” between a standard mirror and a rear view camera that really gives a unobstructed wide angle rear view. The camera mode, although having HD style clarity, lacks visual “depth perception” and I find uncomfortable to view full time. Hopefully the C8’s version will be a technically advanced version. JMHO.

I would think that the C8 would certainly have what all the lesser models will be having, at least. Especially since it will be a necessity with poor rearward vision.

I like this because I reverse the Corvette into the garage, and it would make that much easier.

My Golf has an excellent backup camera, with accurate "guide" lines. The Golf also covers the camera lens when not use. So no cleaning needed. A great feature.

That would be wonderful to have a camera lens covering when not in use. Constant pain to have severe diminished rear visibility because the lens gets dirty on our DD’s.

Good visibility for the C8 would be a very good attribute.

Not sure of the utility of going from SD (480p) to HD (720p or 1080p) cameras due to the small size of the screen. It's hard to tell the difference between 1080p and 4K on a screen less than 50" at normal viewing distances.

That would be great and its SO important. My C7 has better visibility than my XTSvsport except the C7 doesn't have proximity indicators. I hope the the window views coupled with the cameras and proximity indicators in the C8 combine to "set the industry standard for visibility for a sports car".

What you're saying about the display is true. I think when they're referring to HD quality, it's more to the camera's ability of capturing images using newer and better sensors with advanced lighting control? Providing a superior image.
