  • Anyway 458s are not that fast

Cruising home after coming across a 458 after coffee. We drove with spirit for a while. He went hammer down as did I. The 458 did not pull me and I backed out being not completely broken in around 120. What a marvelous sound his car made running off in the distance. In Mexico of course. Next time foot on the firewall to find out where and if the C8 starts to fall back.

ZAnd a good time had by all.

beautiful sports cars and good safe fun.

    in mexico of course

458s rock. F8s too. Yet for some reason i favor the 488.

we dig vettes too...lambos, mclarens and porsches.

    differences keep this sport interesting.

If the z06 sounds like a 458 yet pulls and performs like a huracan performante or better than I'm good.

The C8 , as great as it is, falls on it nose at about 110-120 mph. The 458 will pull the C8 from that speed.

Ferarris was not the first midengine. But Ferarri is the definition. When the others undertake to do a mid engine car, they go to the dictionary and look up "Ferarri".

Poach then say it aint-all-that. All the mid engine cars are Ferarri.

Concur with that. If the Z06 pans out like I hope, just may be my "forever" car.

Unless he he hammered it from a low gear, outside his powerband, I'm not sure how the 458 failed to pull on the C8. The 458 runs the 1/4 mile around 130 MPH or more depending upon the model. That is , which is a big differential.

                Cool story, though.

I think the Z06 will not disappoint. The Stingray was a huge leap, and gamble...clean sheet of paper (from a GM standpoint). Now they have a platform and all they have to do is make it go faster, stop shorter, and handle even better.....I think the bigger issue is what audience are they going to tune the design for? Track folks, where it is a monster, but on the street, not entirely civil? (a very small audience). Or tame it for the street so it appeals to a wider audience, but possibly alienates hard-core track users?

I mention this because the knock against the C7 Z06, was that it could get squirrely on the street with lack of feedback near the limit, correct?

I agree with others. I really love the sound of an American V8, but compared to the sound of a ME Ferrari? not even close

Probably correct. The c8 does an instant downshift and the 458 was not howling at first.

I’ve manually red lined each gear up to 5th, had it to130 with 3 more gears yet to go and it felt like it had a lot more to go. Anyways, IMHO, it did everything it’s built to do and definitely did not fall on its nose.

We were in Maranello several years ago. After touring the Ferrari Museum we went next door to the rental shop where they told me "We're sorry sir but the 458 Italia you had reserved is in the shop". You can imagine my disappointment until she said "but we are upgrading you to a 458 Speciale", it's the racing version. Many pounds lighter and, IIRC, 25 more hp, 596. You have a chaperone but they me let drive it like I stole it. Twenty minutes of ecstasy for only $300.

My wife knew I had rented one for myself, what she didn't know was I had reserved for her a California Special,,, the ultimate 'chick car'. She was totally intimidated but had a great time time driving a Ferrari at 40 miles an hour.

Racer86 Thanks for that illumination as “numbers” like “words” matter.
I would suppose I was somewhat (unintentionally) prevaricating in sharing my experience in manual shift mode. As I was not attempting to break any records or anything. In fact, I was just going through the gears manually to experience how it feels where it nears or is at redline. As such, I was indeed surprised at how much more the car (engine) had inside it, and was hesitant to push it further as I personally have no “need” to go at that speed, but it’s good to know that the Car can do it and just as importantly, that I can handle/control it 👍

Note: I was also driving on a privately owned airfield for landing twin props and less. Thanks again!

Hoyld, the C8 is a great car, we really like ours. It’s neat that you got to open it up to see what you and it can do. The C8 tops out in 6th gear. The engine can’t pull the rpm in 7th or 8th gear. The C8 magic is its extra low gearing that makes it a monster 0-100 or so. After that the magic is gone and the Ferrari 458 and many others will walk away from the C8. Even the Mustang GT 500 is 10-15 mph faster on the front straight of BIg Willow Springs road course.
We enjoy our C8 as a very capable GT touring car. But, it’s certainly not the king of the road.
see ya down the road, Racer86
