Radar Detector

I'm contemplating the purchase of a radar detector for my 2021 C8 coupe. I had an Escort/Passport 9500ix and it saved my bacon several times when driving the 370Z Nismo! The Escort Redline 360c seems to be one of the top performers but at a lofty price of $749. I was hoping to get some creative ideas about installation of the power cord/line and if anyone has installed the Direct Wire Smartcord. I've heard some people say that they were able to tap the power of the "mirror" on the LT2/3?

The mirror works for power, but not a good setup with the smart cord. Where would the remote switch go? I just went through this mounting my Magnum Sti. Don’t bother with the glove box fuses, because nothing in there works for aux power. I found two cold fuses with ignition off, but neither one turned on with the ignition. I have no idea what they do.

The rear fuse box has the solution, but holy **** is it a pain to get to. There are write-ups on where it’s at and there are two open fuse positions, which power up with the ignition. I ran the power cord under the edge of the center console and mounted the remote switch in the gap under the air vent, near the center monitor. Then I ran the cord under the steering wheel and up the A-pillar, then across the top of the windshield (under the headliner edge). The wires are completely hidden, so it looks clean. I’m traveling, so I don’t have any pictures.

Might want to consider. I went to Walmart and purchased a right angle 12V power adapter and used the factory 12V outlet under the glovebox door to power my radar detector as I will seldom if ever use the outlet for anything. Outlet is only on with ignition and if I did need the outlet for something, I can still unplug the detector. Much simpler than disassembling everything to access fuses and the right angle hides it well. Easy to run wire behind console, too.

Not to hijack this thread but since the subject came up -

If others are wondering what detector to buy a YouTuber with the handle VortexRadar does lots of reviews and head to head comparisons - his videos are definitely worth watching if you haven't made up your mind yet.

And there is a new device coming from a company called Radenso that will work quite differently than traditional radar detectors - I've watched all of their technical videos which are very informative - basically instead of just looking for radar at X frequency and then alerting. If it sees a signal at X frequency, it then compares the waveform to known police radar and only alerts if the signal is a match. This is what I'll be running whenever they start shipping them - Covid delayed their release and chip production has affected them as well.

That Radenso looks interesting, but it's going to be VERY expensive. I've seen estimates as high as $2,000!

Of what's available now, the Valentine Gen 2 and the Uniden R7 seem to be the best regarded of the reasonably priced detectors. For the V1, especially with available phone apps, which add a bunch of capabilities.

If you wait for the Radenso Theia your wait will be indefinite. I have the ALP jammers in front and the Escort RL360c. I had it all professional installed and they did power it up in the front fuse box. As another poster mentioned....waiting for the C8 Blendmount, which is apparently coming.

I had not had a radar detector for 25 years and boy did I have to educate myself. Vortex is the best site by far. Also, Radar Detector Forum (RDF). It is stunning how many people know so much about the different bands of radar and different types of laser. I have learned a lot, but still very much a beginner.

You can tap the power on the mirror like most GM products, but not on the engine. LT2/3 would be engine codes. Trim levels are 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT.

The Tap wires on Amazon look to be the wise decision with the least amount of installation issues and YES... I did reverse the "LT2/3" But I'm sure most knew what I was referring to!

I've got two Valentine V1's. Had them for years. (ok, that's not actually true.) I've had V1's for years., but every 5 or so years, I send the oldest one back and they send me new one.. So, I haven't had the SAME V1's... Yep, I used the mirror tap. For me the flat middle pins worked best. My Complaint is the cords are a bit too long. I'll modify it when I get around to it.

OK, I'm a little confused. You have a wire from the lighter socket under the glove box running up to the detector, which is mounted where? And where is the wire hidden? And how is the switch wired into that hidden wiring?
