  • NYAS Reveal Very Possible

A New York Auto Show mid-April C8 reveal remains very possible, moving toward probable, in my opinion.

How many of us have heard of the phrase “under promise and over deliver?” I venture everyone.

Faced with all the bad news GM has had recently, not just the major layoffs, its six models going extinct this year (Volt, CT6, Impala, Cruze, etc), but also the rumor after rumor of the C8’s reveal not being before May, more than a few automedia saying not until this summer, what if GM has gotten smarter and deliberately talked “out loud” knowing the following information would be widely disseminated.

The mid engine Corvette is delayed six months due to a major electrical system design, and its reveal will be May at the earliest, more probably this summer, at a stand alone event, with GM knowing while they shared that inside information, while most of what was subsequently reported was and remains accurate, that there is still a 90% chance that the C8’s reveal is going to take place at the U.S.’s biggest auto show, the New York Auto Show (NYAS).

Over 1,100,000 individuals attend NYAS, and the nationwide press articles/pictures/videos coming out of it reach a worldwide audience in the mega-megamillions.

If so, the private, invite only, stand alone, mid engine C8 reveal would be Tuesday night, April 16th, the NYAS press days would be Wednesday and Thursday, April 17th and 18th, and the public days ocurring April 19th-29th.

The double advantage of NYAS being the ME’s reveal site, is that opens up the door to thousands of Corvette owners also seeing the mid engine ten days layer at the annual National Corvette Museum BASH, their attending seminars led by Tadge, Harlan, Kai, Kirk and other top members of the Corvette team on April 25-27th . Talking about an event with audience with the highest percentage of potential ME buyers....

I made my New York Auto Show hotel reservations in November. I am sure not cancelling them, especially as more than a few hotels around the Jacob Javitz Convention center are already booked for the NYAS time.

We all remember that the historical 1953 New York City Corvette Motorama reveal. Does this add to the sentiment of a NYC 2020 ME debut? BTW, I checked the Waldorf Astoria, site of the ‘53 Motorama, but it is closed for a massive remodel until 2021; however, could GM rent the Javitz Conference Center, the site of the NYAS, before the show starts, for a mega-location, private invitation reveal?

If this were to occur, the C8’s private reveal the day before the NYAS press days, would be exactly 105 days from now.

Here was the NYAS reveal of the C7 Z06 convertible:

Nothing is for sure, but to me it is also far from sure that the ME’s standalone reveal is not coming until May or later, nor secondly that that the C8’s reveal does not have a next-day-tie to our nation’s biggest auto show and its massive nation wide and world wide audience.

I've been to the NYAS many times. If the reveal is there we might go again. Thank goodness one of my good friends lived in the city and knows the "drill" for getting in and out of NYC. We'll see

UThe NY auto show reveal would be awesome but I find it doubtful.

i think the show circuit reveals are history...

they cost too much and deliver to little...

the internet has made auto circuit reveals non competitive.,,

CES would be a surprise..as auto manufacturers are struggling for wall street to not see them as car makers but rather as anything else.(for better multiples)

im kidding ..i have no idea

As a 5 year old who tagged along with his father, I was at the 1953 GM Motorama where the Corvette was first shown It was an extravaganza with an orchestra, singers, and choreographed dancers. But the Corvette was only one of a half dozen or so concept cars featured, and to this five year old, the most memorable and impressive was the Firebird XP-21. That "car" looked like a Bell experimental supersonic aircraft with its wings clipped. It definitely was not a "family car". It looked like a missile with a bubble canopy for the occupant.

The New York Motorama was held at the Waldorf Astoria hotel.

My father was interested in weird cars. I remember we once went to an auto dealer where they were showing a Messerschmidt 3 wheel micro car that looked like a frog. It looked like it belonged in a cartoon.

All I want, is a real picture and acknowledgement by GM that this car exists. I don't care when they will show in flesh. But show us a real picture and Engine specs. It that too much to ask from a Corvette lover?

Perhaps GM could release a new spec each week. Sure they would be “small” at the beginning, such as number of quarts of oil, but then, getting more and more important as the reveal gets closer and closer.

If in fact there is a delay in the development of the C8. The release of the new ME model could be done even in January to start delivery 6 months later like many other manufacturers do. Wishful thinking?

I think that they will reveal it at a standalone event where it is the only focus and will dominate the inter-web news (for a few days). With that, I would expect some 'teasers' at the major shows to start drumming up articles --- think shadowy outline picture momentarily flashed on one of the large screen.

John - I certainly hope you’re right. I agree completely that from a marketing perspective an NYAS announcement followed by presentations and further visibility at the NCM Bash would be a great coming out for the C8.

But in looking at the agenda for the Bash they don’t appear to be building in any significant announcement windows or even much scheduling flexibility. Should an NYAS announcement occur you'd expect that Thursday would be filled with C8 discussion. But with the current agenda folks will have signed up for track events, drives to lunch, etc that they’ve already paid for. They be very disappointed to have to miss the fanfare. And juggling those schedules would be a nightmare.

Just a thought. But i still hope you’re right.

GM will be looking for a bright spot by April that is for sure. Sales in the tank and Vette sales really in the tank this would be a great positive step. Will of course bring the questions about the C8 issues we have been reading about but in the final analysis we really do not know anything about them. When they were first discovered and what actions have been taken to remedy them (no idea what the scope really is). For all we know the solution may have already been released to the Supply Chain and is in final stages of developmental testing. Let us hope!

Good thoughts/ideas/issues. I have talked to my close friends who work at NCM and believe every one who has said, “we have not heard the C8 mentioned even once, let alone about a reveal.”

We shall see how this is handled, that is if the ME is even revealed by then. If so, there is a Friday slot for 1 1/2 hours listed as presentation by the GM Corvette team, and they could share whatever they would want, giving those who wish refunds on their pre-arraigned, pre paid track and other activities, giving others the opportunity to jump into those vacated track and other slots.

Also GM would, again “IF” this were to happen, also have repeat session on Saturday morning.

However, I am thinking that there is less than a 2% chance that ME is actually revealed at the BASH, instead that if it were revealed at NYAS ten days before, additional new show ME’s would also be brought and talked about at the BASH.
