  • ME To Have Wireless Charging Of Your Cell Phone

We see GM progressively expanding the number of its vehicles that have a place on the center console to wirelessly charge your cell phone. Wonder if the ME will have that same capability? Have it only on a higher priced 2LT/3LT options? Or?

The charger panel in the 2019 Silverado is a clever feature: it doubles as a wireless phone charger while enabling at-a-glance smartphone notifications.

The charger panel takes up roughly half of the space within the center console’s bin. It also has left and right bumpers that prevent the phone from sliding off the pad, which is particularly useful during cornering maneuvers.

Simply placing one’s smartphone on the panel charges it via inductive (or wireless) charging. Notably, the charger does not work with all phones – since it requires a device compatible with either the QI or the PMA technologies.

Chevrolet recommends that users refer to the mobile devices manual to confirm phone compatibility. However, we should note that the charger should work with all smartphones equipped with QI and PMA, including the Apple iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X.

I use wireless charging at home. It's really convenient to just drop the phone on the charging pad on my desk, or the table next to my favorite chair when I sit down. And I had a car phone holder with wireless charging built in, but I gave up on it. Why?

I don't generally need to charge my phone in the car, so on the few occasions I do plugging it in isn't really a problem*. And the one situation when I DO need to keep the battery topped up, wireless charging created an issue. That situation is when I'm using navigation for a long time. GPS combined with Google Maps constantly downloading map and traffic data can drain the battery pretty fast. But it also generates a lot of heat, from both the CPU and the the battery. Wireless charging also generates quite a bit of heat. And charging the battery at the same time it's draining creates even more heat.

I found the combination of GPS navigation and wireless charging generated too much heat. Especially in the summer, I'd get error messages that my phone was overheating or shutting down. Sort of defeated the purpose.

    * But i'm not a millennial, staring at my phone almost every waking minute. I realize that some people DO need to charge their phone every chance they get, and for them, this would be very convenient. And if GM is serious about attracting younger buyers, they need to upgrade the C7s electronics in a major way. When a Chevy Cruze has better electronics that the brand's halo car, something needs work.

Thanks for that info. Of course, maybe for the ME, GM had fixed this — for we no longer have an engine in front, nor a torque tube contributing heat upward in/onto the console area.

I have the wireless charging in the center console on my Caddy and the problem with it is you have to remove the phone from the protective housing (cell phone protector) for it to charge, therefore it's completely useless. It's easier just to plug it in.

only some cases cause that issue, I have an S8+ with a case on it and it charges wirelessly on a Qi without removing the case.

As an aside, if you want to use Android Auto with any GM vehicle, you have to connect the phone to the car with a USB cable, which also charges the phone. So until they allow android auto and apple car play without a cable cconnection, your phone charges as a byproduct of using it for nav.

There are now some aftermarket head units that support wireless Android Auto, so GM could do that if they were inclined. But from what I've read, using AA wirelessly for navigation drains the battery so fast you end up plugging it in anyway.

I’ve got a fairly thin protective case on my IPhone and have no trouble with wireless charging in my 18 Sierra or at home.
