  • C8 Engine Build Option at BG

I just had a very brief conversation tonight with a past co-worker friend who had transferred down to Bowling Green with her husband late last year. Both transferred from the Tonawanda Engine Plant down to BG. I was hoping to get her response to when the 2nd shift would be starting up again. However, instead of answering my question she jumped in and asked me "...if I was going to be building my own engine?" she said they are offering an option to build your own engine at the Bowling Green Plant. Ok, that was a huge surprise for I wasn't aware that there was an Engine Build option available yet. I was certainly aware that there had been an option to build your own LT4 engine before.

OK, so has anyone else heard of this Engine Build option being available so soon? Perhaps, she might be hearing rumors in the plant about this as an option being made available in the future? I would tend to believe that this option would be made available for the Z06?

Great find Marc NY. Could this be a 2021 option, however with delayed availability introduction until after the virus is behind us (or at least far better controlled). The plant is not going to risk regular production by bringing in potentially contagious customers which could then get their Engine Build Specialists ill.

The option makes sense with the massive financial investment in the Engine Build Center (EBC) within BGA, especially since the EBC’s size was more than doubled in the late 2017, thirteen week major physical plant physical reorganization, to say nothing of the training investment in the tens of Engine Build Specialists that have worked at BGA since the C7 era started.

Perhaps that option does not start until the 2022 Z06’s start?

You're asking a question that it would appear that either yourself or your contacts could best answer as it appears you are in a better position to do so.

The reason why I was posing a couple of my comments as questions is to try and solicit more feedback from other members who might be privy to a little more information. My contacts right now at BG are limited to two Assembly Line workers who are new there and would really have little knowledge of when certain C8 options might become available like the Engine Build option that she was referring to.

Since I am now retired my engineering contacts within my old Engine Plant are minimal at best because of the COVID-19 and open access to the Plant is restricted. Believe it or not management are very tight lipped and are sworn to secrecy unless you are a member of one of their Launch Teams etc. I was hoping someone else who visits our forum might have information or contacts that could help us learn more about when the Engine Build Option might be come available.

If past history is any indication GM will not do an Engine Build option on the LT2 base engine but rather as an up level engine like an LT5. That option previously was a $5000 option back when it was first made available for the LT4 Engine. Tonawanda and I believe Spring Hill also had supplied the 6.2L LT4 blocks.

I have just found your posts on the engine production to be the best and informative information we have seen on this forum and for that I thank you. I am very appreciative as I am sure others are.

Thanks ZORA 69! I really appreciate your kind words and support.

BTW: Sometimes I wish that I wasn't even eligible to get a GM Discount because I wouldn't be still waiting here to order a C8 right now, instead I would be driving one!

Do you have any idea when employee and supplier pricing might become available?

It was $5,000 for the LT4 in the Z06. If the next Z06 is a DOHC engine, it might be even more. Who knows?

If I were a betting man I would say it will probably be upwards of $7,500 by 2022.

I wish I knew when it will be available. My dealer still doesn't know when either. This C8 launch has been nothing like any other new model vehicle launch in GM's history. It might not become available until sometime in 2022 MY. However, I may try to order a 2021 in hopes for the best when it finally comes in.

BTW: I did the same thing back when I ordered my Chevy SSR in 2004. When it finally came in the dealer owner said that I could now use my GM discount. That was when one dealership was wanting 20K over MSRP back then. The salesman called me back a week after I ordered my SSR and said I could have it for only $10K over MSRP. I can't print what I finally said to him here... LOL
