One of each type of powertrains makes a lot of sense. That is discussed in this video as well.

balance in transitions is really how we get public buy in for the desired goals.

20 minutes of public charging allows those not living in SFR s to own evs if they want to and that time frame is decreasing quickly.

Now seeing all the ecological damage to mother earth from mining to just make the cars and battery's is a big no for me. Then the windmills to power them while getting rid of better sources. Let alone the take over of land and other country's for pure greed!
Next car will be an Outback gas engine the new wife wants. Use our gas and oil not China products and battery's.

Hopefully the sodium ion batteries will be the future as creation and production does not pollute the environment.

I was listening to guy rag on and on about EVs this weekend after Golf at the 19th ... I asked him, do you own a EV? He said No. Then I asked, have you ever Driven a EV? He said not yet. Lastly, do you know anyone who has an EV? He said, I'm sure I do, I see quite a few in our Club Parking Lot. I said, you should probably take one out for a test drive and get some first hand information.

As always, I never hear from anyone who actually owns an Electric Vehicle have anything negative to say about them. 😉

that’s what makes the world go round. Actually owning an ev for more than a week or a month and all the fears of owning an ev fad away ..

I always say you can’t fix stupid.

I tend to try and remember this when I find people ranting on subjects they have very little practical experience on.

Most people ranting against EVs (or anything for that matter) is because they deep inside have a desire to own something else and thus they praise what they already have to make themselves comfortable in the situation they are in….

And in today’s world where many people are getting increasingly ignorant because their view of the world is orchestrated by the algorithms of Youtube and Facebook who learn their interests and then pump them full of like minded opinions… This situstion will only get worse and people will get increasingly more stupid

To hear people ranting about mining rare minerals to make car batteries in times where many batteries are iron-based and at the same time driving gas guzzlers while forgetting historic oil spills, deaths etc of oil drilling…. C'mon

Let’s all be much more data driven and not explain why our things are the best by saying other people’s stuff is the worst😎

To all the naysayers….. Go drive and own an EV or at least read a f****** book or as a bare minimum at least one empirically correct article….

PS, by naysayer I don’t mean somebody that has actually made a concoius and educated decision… I mean all the people shouting how much they hate things they know little to absolutely nothing about.

Please, folks. Nobody is forcing you to buy anything. And by saying EV is the future, that does not mean they hate ICE. I have both.

I just urge everyone to be critical of the source where you are obtaining information from and also to apply critical thinking when reasoning. Please…

I don't own an EV but I have driven several. Not for me at this time. I tow my personal equipment to and from different pieces of land I own, haul my tractors around, run a construction company, go on long road trips, etc.. I am not so much against EVs as they don't suit my situation yet. I do have several close friends that have had Tesla cars and not kept them very long. I also have several friends that sing praises about their Teslas. I know one guy with a Rivian who likes it but doesn't love it as much as he thought he would. Am I the most educated guy on EVs vs ICE vehicles, absolutely not, I just know that they don't fit my needs and I don't see one I would want right now.

Sodium would have used long ago if it worked. Batteries experiments are not new.
they know long ago what works and what doesnt.

Somehow, the state of the EV industry reminds me of the early days of utility based electricity generation and distribution.

It got started by Edison with Direct Current generation and distribution. This proved impractical for any system covering more than a few blocks. Eventually, it was superseded by the Westinghouse/Nikoli Tesla Alternating current system, which allowed for voltage transformations through transformers, multi-phase distribution systems, and was generally more practical and efficient.

Aside from the environmental damage from building and lugging around a big lithium battery, recharging it quickly will be a problem, and the potential for uncontrolled fires make them a hazard.

I think we will eventually see the EV industry shift to hydrogen fuel cells as an energy source, and those who bet the farm on lithium battery based EVs will sorely regret it.

DaviM, your post is the fairest, most relevant one on this subject I have ever read. For certain uses they are close to magical, such as the local pizza delivery Chevy Bolt (being used in my home town), and EV would be for the entire postal vehicle local delivery fleet, etc. For others they plain do not work now and might never work well.

I see them also working well as a second vehicle for an urban couple or family that has a garage with their own 240V EVSE (“charger”) in their garage, but, and I am now thinking of a specific family, while he uses the smallish EV perfectly to drive 30 miles each way to his M-Th workplace, she uses their ICE mini-van to haul around the kids and their sports equipment to after school activities, and do so many other things. And then they use that ICE for hauling it loaded to their cabin in the woods for their three day family weekends.

Just like a hammer is great for some things but a screwdriver is the best tool for doing other repairs, we have an ICE and an EV. The combo works superlatively for us.

DavidM, great and accurate use of words to describe bifurcated modern reality!

I am so glad that smart people more than 120 years ago decided that both gasoline power vehicles and electric vehicles were better than the horse and buggy, for hell, I want my Corvette to have more than one horse-power.

As Elliott Gould said in the famous 1970 moving, “Getting Straight” a moving about resisting changing times, “Stop trying to hold back the hands of the clock! *It'll tear your arms out.”

Does anyone, let alone me know what is best for the future, e.g. hydrogen powered cars? I have not a clue…Everyone needs in 2023 to buy whatever makes them happiest and meets their driving/mobility needs.
