Tesla slices prices on Models S and X as its stock plunges

Tesla is lowering the price of its two most expensive models by $2,000 to $3,000, not including tax credits.

The company's stock is at its lowest point since late 2016, after several Wall Street analysts questioned its growth prospects and cited slowing customer demand for its cars.

Tesla lost $700 million in the first quarter, but CEO Elon Musk vows a return to profitability by the third quarter.

Tesla has sliced the price of its two most expensive models after several Wall Street analysts questioned the demand for its cars. The company on Monday cut $3,000 from the price of the Model S sedan and $2,000 from the Model X SUV.

The Model S now starts at $71,250 while the X starts at $71,950. The prices don't include federal and state tax credits for electric-vehicle purchases.

Tesla wouldn't say if slowing sales influenced its decision, but it said it periodically adjusts prices and available options, according to the Associated Press. Tesla said the decreases offset price increases from a month ago when it offered longer battery range and added a new drive system and suspension.

The moves come as Tesla's stock is under pressure, at times dropping below $200 per share this week. Several analysts have questioned whether the company can sell enough cars to cover its expenses without dipping into its shrinking cash reserves.

Shares traded Tuesday afternoon at $205.62, up slightly from Monday's closing price. They are down more than 38 percent so far this year, cutting the company's market value more than $20 billion to $36.5 billion. On Monday the shares hit their lowest point since late 2016.

Tesla said in a statement that the reductions are about 2% to 3% on the prices of the S and X. The company last week raised the price of its top-selling Model 3 by $400, pushing the base price to $35,400. "By any reasonable standard, these small changes are not newsworthy," the company said in a statement.

Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives wrote on Monday that he was concerned about Tesla's growth prospects and the demand for the Model 3 during the coming quarters. He called Tesla a "code red" situation. "We have continued concerns around Tesla's ability to balance this 'perfect storm' of softer demand and profitability concerns, which will weigh on shares until Musk & Co. prove otherwise in terms of delivering solid results over the coming quarters," Ives wrote, referring to CEO Elon Musk.

After two profitable quarters, Tesla said last month it lost $702 million in the first quarter of 2019, one of its worst performances in two years. Sales tumbled 31% in the period. Musk predicted another loss in the second quarter but said Tesla would be profitable again by the third quarter.

The carmaker recently closed a $2.7 billion funding round, giving it enough cash to survive another 10 months, Reuters reported. Musk now is on a cost-cutting mission, with plans to review "literally every payment that leaves our bank account," according to Reuters.

In January, the automaker cut its prices by $2,000 per vehicle, acknowledging that the pending expiration of a $7,500 federal tax credit for its electric cars will hurt sales. The credit is gradually being phased out for Tesla by the end of the year.

In my opinion, which I've said for quite sometime, in the near future someone in the automobile industry will buy Tesla, and I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't GM. The technology is there. Musk got the jump on everybody but he's not a car business guy. You can't do it without dealers, at least the good ones anyway! He needs to take somebody's big money and move on to rockets full time. Anyone who buys Tesla will automatically jump to the top of the EV (and possibly autonomous) technology heap. I can just see the big three nervously sitting around waiting to make the plunge for the right amount of money but not wanting to be left at the gate by one of the other two or a European manufacturer!

Very interesting idea whl3. I hope it would be GM. However, would Elon’s ego allow anyone to buy “his” company even if it were faced with financial death?

John, if he can't buy rocket fuel (or rocket parts) because no one will sell him for credit reasons, he'll give up the automobile business in a heartbeat to get cash!

Morgan Stanley has cut its worst-case forecast on Tesla stock from $97 to just $10, citing concerns about the company’s debt load and geopolitical exposure. Currently trading at 192.22 down another 6.27% today.

              And CR piles on

Tesla Inc.’s latest iteration of Autopilot, the car maker’s suite of advanced driver-assistance features, can make choices that are dangerous, illegal or both, Consumer Reports said Wednesday.

Tesla TSLA, -6.36% upgraded its Autopilot feature last month, essentially allowing Tesla vehicles to change lanes on their own in some instances. The company repeatedly has said that drivers are responsible for all maneuvers, and must be in control of their cars at all times.

Monitoring the system for all potential pitfalls was ultimately more work than just changing lanes without it, Consumer Reports said.

Instead of helping drivers, the system made some questionable choices, such as cutting too closely in front of other cars and passing on the right, Consumer Reports said.

“In practice, we found that Navigate on Autopilot lagged far behind a human driver’s skill set: The feature cut off cars without leaving enough space and even passed other cars in ways that violate state laws, according to several law enforcement representatives CR interviewed for this report. As a result, the driver often had to prevent the system from making poor decisions,” Consumer Reports said.

Musk will declare care passe, sell the car operations to GM, retaining the battery technology business and the space rocket business.

And GM will put a Cadillac/Tesla label on all its electric cars and sell them through its dealers.

Here's more of the CR test report and a link to their original piece. I think this discussion is relevant to potential "driver aid" features on the C8.

One area of particular concern is Tesla’s claims that the vehicle’s three rearward-facing cameras can detect fast-approaching objects from the rear better than the average driver can. Our testers found the opposite to be true in practice.

“The system has trouble responding to vehicles that approach quickly from behind,” Fisher says. “Because of this, the system will often cut off a vehicle that is going a much faster speed since it doesn’t seem to sense the oncoming car until it’s relatively close.”

Fisher says merging into traffic is another problem. “It is reluctant to merge in heavy traffic, but when it does, it often immediately applies the brakes to create space behind the follow car—this can be a rude surprise to the vehicle you cut off.”

Our testers often canceled a pass that had been initiated by Autopilot—usually by applying steering force to move the car back into the travel lane—when they felt that the maneuver would be unsafe.

Ultimately, even in light traffic, our testers found that the system’s lack of situational awareness made driving less pleasant.

“In essence, the system does the easy stuff, but the human needs to intervene when things get more complicated,” Fisher says.
