Your worst mileage daily driver

Coming from England in the early '70's I was enthralled by the idea of big American V8's. I was also commuting about 60 miles a day, but gas was $0.50/gallon (that's Canadian gallons BTW). And having no money I bought used and learned auto mechanics.

So for myself I had a '71 Trans-Am 455HO, and for the family a Olds Cutlass Vista Cruiser (350, color just like in the picture). These were the cars I learned to work on. When the Vista-Cruiser died I replaced it with a Olds Custom Cruiser. (455, also just like this picture). Loved the multi-tailgate on that thing.

These early '70's emissions controlled engines had to be the worst mileage ever. I think I got 8-9 MPG highway and by the early '80's gas wasn't as cheap. My next car in '81 was a Honda. And from then on it was Japanese.

Lincoln Mark V with a 460 engine. Loved the car but remember it was a gas hog.

2001 F250 crew cab 4x4 V10 The picture is not my actual truck but almost the same . Usually with the stock tires 10-12 mpg then the bigger ones lowered it to 8-9 , gas went up to almost $4.00 gallons and was time to sell ....

The 1973 Buick Electra 225, or Deuce and a Quarter, with a 455 c.i. and 400 turbo trans would lay down some rubber grabbing 2nd gear. You would be hard-pressed to find a car that rode as nice today. As for the mileage, as they say, if you have to ask…

Back in the "bad old days" of big V8s and 4 bbl carbs, I don't think I ever calculated my has mileage. Except maybe once or twice on a highway. I had a Dodge with 318 V8, 340 heads, Edelbrock manifold, Holly 4 bbl, headers and exhaust with glass packs. I think I got 16 - 17 mph on the highway. No idea what I got around town.
