  • Vacation Time!

Whiling away the days waiting for the reveal in Alaska. Arrived at our lodging just outside Denali National Park yesterday. We flew out from Virginia at 8:00 am EDT and arrived here at 9:30 pm (Alaska Daylight time - 4 hours earlier) or 1:30 am EDT. Then it stays light all the time. To say my body clock is screwed up is an understatement. Here's the view from our lodge at 10:00 pm last night. It didn't look much different at midnight, and only a little dimmer at 1:00 am!

Today we took the bus tour all the way to the end (almost) of the park road. (Not allowed to drive private cars after the first 15 miles.) PERFECT weather, cool and clear, for viewing Denali mountain. We found out the peak is only visible about 30% of the time, the rest of the time shrouded by clouds. As you can see, no such problems today! Denali is 20,310 feet high. To give you an idea of scale, this photo was taken from 40 - 50 miles away. The closest the road gets to the mountain is about 30 miles.

Finally, instead of taking the bus ride back out of the park (about 6 hours each way!), we flew out in single engine plane, and got to see Denali up close and personal:

This was taken at about 10,000 feet. Denali has almost TWO more miles of height above us. The view of the mountains and glaciers from the air was incredible. HIGHLY recommended.

Nice photos meyerweb. Looks beautiful. I occasionally "work" a resident Denali National Park Ranger over Ham Radio. He lives in a cabin somewhere in the park's 6 million acre wilderness. What a job. Have fun!

We drove up the AlCan to Alaska, got as far north as above the Artic Circle, and also went to Denali. The first trip, as meyerweb noted for visibility of the mountain is far from guaranteed, we saw the top half completely covered by clouds, yet the bottom was pristinely clear, and during our second trip, we saw the top half perfectly, but the bottom was totally cloud covered.

So in a way, we have seen the whole mountain LOL.

Thanks all, will have more photos to show at some point, but been busy, busy, and the internet here is, to be charitable, less than gig speed.

Haven't had much time to do anything with photos, but want to post this one here from a couple of days ago. This was sitting in a tree about 10 feet off the ground, and I was less than 10 feet from the tree. Pretty darn cool.
