  • Well, this was an exciting evening!

The latest thunderstorm to pass through kicked up during dinner, lighting struck a tree in our backyard, and everything connected to the FIOS and inside COAX is fried. Three TVs, dead. Tivo, dead. Stereo receiver, dead (interestingly, I don't think that's connected to COAX). All my networking gear (Access Point, switches), dead. FIOS box in the basement, dead. Hoping the NAS drive (network attached storage) isn't fried. Thank goodness for the hacked WiFi hotspot on my phone!

Fortunately, no fire, and the tree didn't come down. Will have to get it checked out by a tree service, though. Fun times!

meyerweb, we are so sorry. What an ugly situation you have. We hope that with your knowlege, the tree folks examining and then telling you your tree can remain safely for the future, and your insurance company doing the right thing, that you can get back to where you were as soon as possible.

Had a "small world" happening today. A guy from a TV repair shop came out to check out the big screen and write up and estimate for the insurance company. Turns out he's an officer in the Free State Corvette Club (Maryland), just across the river. They're the club that puts on the Ocean City Corvette cruise in every October. We spent more time talking about 'vette related stuff than he did checking out the equipment.

Got notification of the settlement amount from the insurance company. I think they're actually making a more than fair settlement, considering how old some of the equipment was.

But boy, is replacing, installing, networking and configuring all this stuff is a pain in the butt.

Well I hope that you get it all straightened out soon. This is something I know that I'd have to pay someone to fix and I don't like other people fixing my stuff ... ?
