We have a Belgium Terveren Shepherd. For those who are not familiar, think of a German Shepherd, only with the addition of an additional, wavy middle-coat, so while their heads often look just like a German Shepherd, they can be best thought of a “wide bodied” version (though he shrinks width-wide when he gets a bath). His name is “Shadow,” been the best dog we have ever had. We live on 13 acres of woods and fields, yet he chooses to sit right outside the front door and survey his “kingdom,” but he ever wanders off. He used to love to chase the deer who daily wander over our property but now that he is almost 13 years old, having also learned that they faster than he, the combo has led him to not even try anymore. He is so sweet, but can be one ferocious watchdog if we do not say the magic words, “Shadow, he/she is a friend.” He is a big, gentle love!

Click image for larger version Name: Views:	1 Size:	3.22 MB ID:	2479 Our dog is a 3 year old doberman named Eddy after that great cyclist, Eddy Merckx.

He naturally just wants to be on guard, so this is a typical posture for him if I'm out in the garden. He watches for foxes crossing, and boaters on the river. He's a people dog, not particularly sociable with other dogs, even though I tried my best when he was a puppy.

Coincidentally, just after I posted this,,an intruder started to enter our property from the woodlot to the West. It's private property but none of the other owners in that direction bother to clear or maintain their property down at the river. And it's not fenced. Possibly it was just a guy out for a stroll, but I have my doubts. Eddy's barking and demeanor was enough to send the guy scurrying away. First time that this has happened and Eddy proved his worth.

Pretty dog and property. Always seems nice to me to live by the water. Maybe again one day. Where's the boat dock.

There is a pretty decrepit dock hidden by the final slope down to the river. It's an unusual river with 2-way flows as it is used as a reservoir for the hydro-electric power station at Niagara Falls, with it's outflow to the Niagara river controlled.

Got adopted by a tiny, 4 week old, neonatal kitten.(first pic) A neighbor heard her screaming for 2 days and thought from the sound that it was a full sized cat; he left food for her. We searched around and rescued her out of another neighbor's shrubbery about 30" off the ground. My neighbor gave her to me. She instantly quieted down. No mother anywhere around. So we are now her adopted parents. She is now 6+ weeks old now. (second pic)

Thank you, but of course we just selected him from among 70 others that day at the Humane Society. As we were checking out, the Director came over and said,” that is the one I would have picked.”

Good for you MReid to adopt a kitten that would never have otherwise made it! We had cats for 40 years, but now retired and doing a lot of road trips (10,000+ miles annually), we have decided to take a break from getting another one(s). As we have the most fantastic “dog camp” to take Shadow, that he loves going to, that is thankfully not an issue when we take off on another trip.

That’s certainly different. Is it not really navigable?

It's navigable for 10 or 20k upriver. We also live close to the engineering marvel that is the Welland canal. The river flows under the canal through tunnels. So it's definitely not navigable in the direction of the Falls. Which is probably a good thing. The canal bridges the 100M difference between Lakes Erie and Ontario. The other choice is to go over the falls.

I prefer not the “going over the falls” option. Did not know about this one. Thank you. You are one hearty soul living there in the winter — for I have been there twice in January and it was temperature and wind chill challenging.

Collectively they are a pack! More like siblings in that they love each other but also love to torment each other.
