Looks happy. I used to leave my garage door cracked at the bottom to let our indoor/outdoor cat some daytime shelter years ago when we lived in Albany, NY.

Bad idea. Closed the door and we left with the cat for a holiday trip. About a week later we returned to find a huge dead raccoon in the garage. It had apparently been living there. No damage to the 1989 Vette parked in the garage but otherwise yuck.

Takeyour dog on a tight lease and the guest will leave from the noise....

dont get to close because racoons are fierce and often carry rabies...

but barking dogs scare the **** out of them...and just a few minutes and the racoon will leave shortly after...just dont corner them with the dog b/c like I said those little guys are fierce fighters and will scratch you or the dog...

do it from a slight distanced and give them an escape route...

interestingly enough your dogs scent will in the future keep racoons away.

like i said they look cute but challenged they can hurt a dog...and nobody wants to put down their dog whose got rabies..

last time i had the mom racoon in the garage with her baby....they was one crazy *****...lol

Very good cautions JB. We have a 95 pound German Shepherd, and I do not want him and even a 40 pound raccoon to get into it.

I'll just be making sure the door stay's shut & enclosing around the roof some more. Nothing inside to really damage & my dog can't get that far back in the yard . Thanks for the concern...

Living as I did in the raccoon capital of the world-Toronto, I have some knowledge of the habits and behavior of these critters.

IME they have no fear of dogs and will stand their ground. Only a very large dog will be able to deal with them without the risk of getting hurt. In Toronto these things grow to a huge size. The Russian Wolfhound I had at the time was able to grab a 30 lb raccoon by the neck and give it a violent shake. Twice this happened.

Any other size dog is risking a scratched face or bitten off tail (saw that).

The country raccoons where I live now are less of a nuisance. They don't seem to have learned how to sponge off humans. Last week a yearling was in our yard, the Doberman went nuts circling it and barking his head off, and it was totally unconcerned.

Absolutely the last thing you want is one of these in your attic, so to avoid any threat of invasion, I'd just buy a trap or hire a guy. Just make sure it's released a long way away.

In Toronto they live off the buffet that is in the food waste recycling bins. Every few years the City has a competition to provide a raccoon-proof bin. And invariably within a few days of being delivered there will be stories showing them being broken into. The is an animal expert there who believes that City life has made them more intelligent.

Here is the old bin - too easy

And the new one, which has a rotating locking handle. No raccoon will ever understand that will they?

Raccoon fighting league busted - in Canada naturally. I take no responsibility for the truth of this report.

Police uncover illegal raccoon fighting ring

                    November 19, 2018

From: Philip St. George, thenorthbaybay.ca staff

NORTH BAY — The North Bay Police, in cooperation with Ministry of Natural Resources, have busted an illegal raccoon fighting ring in North Bay.

“Yes, I can confirm that the NBPS have disrupted an extensive raccoon fighting league,” announced North Bay Police Sergeant Jeanette Lawrence Monday morning. “I would like to thank the MNR for their help, along with those who came forward to share information with us.”

The raccoon fighting ring, which called itself “Coon Clashes,” hosted anywhere from 3 to 10 raccoon fights a week, says Lawrence.

“They did everything from one-on-one fights to ‘battle royals’ where 8 or more raccoons would duke it out for the title of ‘Raccoon King.'”

“The ‘Raccoon King’ would be given extra peanut butter *****.”

                    Informant to Thank

Of particular help was former “Coon Clashes” member Landon Green.

“At some point I realized I just couldn’t do it anymore,” says Green. “Watching so many raccoons pummel each other took a toll on me. I had to get out.”

Green’s information was the catalyst for bringing the ring down.

“They give some of them knives,” says Green. “I saw one raccoon that went thirteen rounds with a pair of brass knuckles.”

                    An “Incredibly Developed” League

Sergeant Lawrence says she has never seen an illegal fight league as “incredibly developed as this one.”

“They had names for all the raccoons. The reigning champ was ‘Whacker Racc,’ but there was The Rac-goon, Raccoon Diaz, Conquercoon, George Cooney, Jack Racc and one just called ‘Bob.”

“Apparently Bob was too dangerous to put in the ring.”

Each raccoon had its own entrance music, mini-pyrotechnic show, and trainer.

                    Adopt a Raccoon

Since its shut down, 40 raccoons in 6 different weight classes have been sent to The North Bay Humane Society and to Sudbury. All the raccoons will soon be up for adoption.

Those looking to help give a raccoon a home are encouraged to contact The North Bay Humane Society, though Lawrence warns that raccoons can often prove difficult pets.

“Especially these ones. I mean, you’ll have to decide for yourself whether you want an animal that has a ‘Killer Racc’ tattoo on its chest.”
