  • VIDEO - Oliver Gavin Leaves A Smokey C8.R Salute to the Fans at Sebring

    Crossposted from

Corvette Racing’s Oliver Gavin capped his final drive with the team by leaving some smokey burnouts and donuts in the Corvette C8.R at Sebring’s Turn 17.

The ace driver posted the video to his Instagram account with the caption “I was given permission by the boss to put on a smoke show.” and he gave credit for the video to “@sillysienna and the flag marshalls at T17.”

Olly’s smoke show is indeed spectacular and during the burnout, his super sticky race Michelins look like they catch on fire! We’ll have to ask Lee Willard about this!

As Oliver burns rubber, make sure you turn your speakers up to eleven to get the high-revving sound of the C8.R’s flat-plane crank V8, as a variant of that engine will be offered on the 2022 Corvette Z06. (FYI, the pops and cracks you hear in the background are the fireworks going off.)

Thanks again Oliver for all the great memories in your service to Corvette over the years. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors and we’ll always be rooting for you!

Wow does that sound good. Probably got another 1,000+ to convert to their buying a FPC Z06. [Not that I personally had any doubts before.]

Gotta love it. If you can, read Ollie's interview in Racer. It is pretty special, especially how Ollie got hired by Fehan and Pratt. He and Andy Pilgrim had a lap time runoff at Sebring, which ended up getting Ollie his ride. He talks pretty reverently about Andy, Ron Fellows, Doug Fehan and the whole Corvette Racing gang.

For what it's worth, the two IMSA 911's are headed to Europe to race full-time in the WEC, and the BMW's may only run part-time next year. Unfortunately, GTLM may go the way of the ALMS series, which would be a shame. We'll have to see what takes its place. As it is, Corvette Racing has won more GTLM Championships than any other racing organization - what a legacy.

What was great was the huge banner "Thanks for the memories, Oliver" (or something similar!) that Sebring hung at the start/finish line in tribute to Ollie. That alone shows what a class act that he is!

Been watching Corvette racing it seems like forever. Actually since 1973. I’m sure they will find other makes to join the series to race the C8R. Rumor has it maybe Aston Martin and Ferrari might come into GTLM .
Those team corvette drivers are a special breed and seem like a very close family. Sure hope they work something out for next year. We have our plans fo Daytona 24 again.
