    That is a wonderful article. I had no knowledge of its 1930’s inspirational predecessor, let alone that car racing at LeMans. Thanks for that fun link.

      Possibly there was more than one influence. Key to the need for a split window was the desire to have a strong spine running along the roof to the rear.

            Peter Brock was a 19 year old designer when he started in the studio who drew up a concept for the new car. In his talk he cites Bill MItchell's trip to Italy in the late '50's, and the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante as a major inspiration. See from 21:00 on of his talk.

              That is one really beautiful Alfa. Amazing designers of that time period at GM, from Harley Earl, Bill Mitchell, Larry Shinoda and Peter Brock.
